Out & about in Suffolk

This is a bunch of our favourite things to do, or places to visit when on holiday in Suffolk.

We are often asked to recommend pubs, walks, beaches, places for afternoon tea etc, so we’ve pulled a whole load of our favourites together into one place. Effectively this page will give you enough to keep you occupied for your whole stay, whether it’s on one of our Barges, or in our Barns or Cottages.

We have a little 30-minute ‘Woodfarm triangle’ of amazing places to visit between the Barns and both Barges, and they are all doable wherever you are.

Places to visit

Culture innit? There are some wonderful destinations all within easy reach of our Barns and Barges. From Framlingham Castle and the East Anglia Transport Museum to the Suffolk Punch trust where you can admire the Suffolk Punch horses, as well as many more. With dog friendly Suffolk in mind, we’ll introduce you to the many wonderful Suffolk beaches. And of course we will bang on about the fact that we have not one, but two designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are 47 of them in the UK and we’ve nabbed two! Greedy, I know. Suffolk Coast and Heaths and Dedham Vale are both well worth a visit.

Activities

To some, the very word ‘activities’ will burn calories, but whatever takes your fancy, from a short stroll round a lake to 19 holes hitting a small defenceless golf ball, there’s something for everyone here. You can immerse yourself in Viking history at Sutton Hoo, placed firmly on the map by the 2021 Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes film ‘The Dig’, or take a gentle (and less violent!) stroll around the Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds, or soak up the rich art history that Suffolk has to offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the beaches in Suffolk dog friendly?

A lot of the beaches are either dog friendly all year round, or for certain months, usually out of the main summer season. We list them all.

Are there any famous landmarks in Suffolk?

Suffolk is blessed with some wonderful iconic locations, such as the Woodbridge Tidemill, which is instantly recognisable, and the world-famous concert hall at Snape Maltings. And Woodfarm is blessed to have Barges overlooking both of them! There are also a number of other well-known places, from Sutton Hoo, placed firmly on the map by the 2021 Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes film ‘The Dig’, and Framlingham Castle, immortalised by Framlingham’s own Ed Sheeran in his hit ‘Castle on the Hill’.

Suffolk is blessed to have not one, but two designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Admittedly one of them is on the border with Essex, but we don’t mind sharing. There are 47 of them in the UK and we’ve nabbed two! Greedy, I know. Suffolk Coast and Heaths, and Dedham Vale are both well worth a visit.
