How to Have the Ultimate Cosy Weekend in Suffolk
By Carl Scott
There’s a certain art to creating a weekend which feels both restorative and memorable all at once. Don’t fret, though, because at Woodfarm Barns & Barges, we’ve fine-tuned it: slow mornings, crisp walks, comforting food, and long evenings spent in front of the fire. Autumn is the perfect season to embrace cosiness, and Suffolk gives you the backdrop for a weekend that feels like a warm hug. Here’s exactly how you do it.
Friday Evening – Arrival and Unwind
Arrive at your Barn or Barge at the exact moment the sun sets. There’s something wonderful about stepping inside, the lamps glowing, a welcome hamper waiting for you, and the scent of wood ready for the stove. Light the fire, pour a glass of wine, and ease into your weekend. Some guests like to pop to the local pub on their first night. Indeed, The Crown at Stowupland is only a short drive away and perfect for a hearty dinner. Others prefer to stay in and make the most of the Barn, with a simple supper and nothing on the agenda but relaxation.
Saturday – Exploring and Indulging
Start the day with a lazy breakfast loaded with local bread, eggs and jam from our hamper before heading out for a walk. Dunwich Heath is glorious in autumn, the sea air brisk and the heather turning rich colours. For something inland, try Framlingham, where the castle towers rise dramatically above the mere.
After your walk, it’s time to treat yourselves. Suffolk is dotted with numerous cosy cafés and tearooms: think scones by the fire, teapots steaming, and cakes too tempting to resist. Lavenham’s tearooms are especially charming, too, if you’re looking for options.
As the afternoon fades, why not browse antique shops in Long Melford or wander the Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds, carpets of leaves crunching underfoot? Return to your barn or barge for the evening, where a wood-burning stove, blankets and a bottle of Suffolk wine await you.
Sunday – Slow and Sweet
A cosy weekend isn’t about rushing. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. On Sunday, savour a slow morning. Coffee in bed, perhaps, with views of the countryside or river mist beyond your window. If you fancy another outing, why not take a gentle stroll along Southwold Pier or through a village like Kersey. Or simply linger in your barn to read, chat, play a board game.
Leave feeling rested, connected and already plotting your return. That’s the Woodfarm way.
