The Secret to Creating Uniquely Authentic Holiday Character
By Carl Scott
One of the things people often mention when they stay at Woodfarm Barns is the character.
Not just the beams, the brickwork, the setting, or the fact that you can bring up to three dogs. Those things all help, of course. But the real character comes from the bits and pieces we’ve curated over the years.
And that is the important word: curated.

We have never tried to create the look of Woodfarm by walking into a furniture shop with a big credit card and ordering “country cottage charm” in one go. That would be quicker, certainly. It would also be easier. But it would probably end up looking like a showroom, and that has never been the point.
The secret is finding things with a past life.
Old tables. Proper chairs. Mirrors with a few marks. Reclaimed doors. Odd little cupboards. Lamps that look as though they have already heard a few stories. Pieces that have lived somewhere before they came to us.
Some of them come from local antique shops, including Clara Bowe. Others come from auctions, reclamation yards, house clearances, or places I probably found after taking a wrong turn and pretending I meant to go there.
That is where the fun is.

You can’t really fake that sort of detail. A new item might be smart, useful and beautifully made, but an older piece brings something else with it. It has texture. It has age. It has the odd knock and scrape. It has that feeling that it belongs somewhere.
And when you put those pieces into a Barn, Cottage or Barge, they help create a space that feels individual.
That matters to us. Woodfarm Barns and Barges is not a row of identical holiday lets with the same sofa, the same cushions and the same safe little prints on the wall. Each place has its own feel. Some are cosy and romantic. Some are more rustic. Some have a quirk or two, because frankly, so do we.
It is not about making everything perfect. It is about making everything feel right.
That might be a reclaimed beam, an old trunk, a weathered table, a vintage mirror or a bit of furniture that has clearly had a more interesting life than most of us. Put together properly, those things create warmth and personality.
They also suit Suffolk.
This part of the world is full of history, quiet corners, old buildings, local makers, antique shops, reclamation yards and proper character. It would seem a bit strange to ignore all of that and fill our places with flat-pack furniture and laminated instruction manuals.
Our guests come here for a break, but they also come for a feeling. They want somewhere that feels different from home, but still comfortable. Somewhere romantic, relaxed, dog-friendly and full of small details that make them look twice.
That is the secret, really.
Not expensive furniture. Not chasing trends. Not trying too hard.
Just taking the time to find things with a bit of soul, giving them a new home, and letting them help tell the story of Woodfarm.
You can find full details, prices, availability, photos, videos and reviews elsewhere on the site, and we hope you will come and have a look at what we have to offer for yourselves some time.
Woodfarm Barns Character & Style FAQs
How do you create the unique character at Woodfarm Barns? The character of our barns, cottages, and barges comes from being “gathered” rather than bought all at once. We avoid mass-produced showroom furniture, choosing instead to slowly collect antique pieces, auction finds, and reclaimed items over many years to give each property its own distinct personality and warmth.
Where do you source the furniture and decor for the properties? We source our pieces from local Suffolk antique shops (like Clara Bowe), reclamation yards, regional auctions, house clearances, and independent makers. We love finding unique, pre-loved items that have a past life and a story to tell, which perfectly suits the historic charm of the Suffolk countryside.
Are all the Woodfarm Barns and Barges decorated the same way?Not at all. We intentionally avoid a “cookie-cutter” look. Every single barn, cottage, and barge has its own individual feel—some are intensely romantic and cosy, others are more rustic, and some feature quirky details. You won’t find identical sofas, cushions, or generic prints across our properties.
Why do you choose vintage and reclaimed items over new furniture?New furniture can be useful and smart, but older pieces bring texture, soul, and a sense of belonging. The small knocks, scrapes, and weathered finishes of vintage mirrors, old trunks, and reclaimed beams create a relaxed, authentic environment that makes our guests feel comfortably at home.
What can guests expect from the atmosphere at Woodfarm Barns? Our guests can expect an environment that prioritises warmth and soul over rigid perfection. It is a dog-friendly, romantic, and relaxed space filled with thoughtful details, designed to offer a unique break from daily life while celebrating the historic character and quiet charm of Suffolk.
