Holiday Barges: think floating ‘Holiday Cottage’ but really cool!
If you’re looking for something beyond a standard hotel room, our Dutch Barges offer a sense of calm you can only find on the water. Moored in two prime Suffolk spots, these are high-end floating retreats where you can watch the tide turn and the local birdlife drift by from your own deck. You get the best of both worlds: the calm of life on the river, combined with a cosy, spacious interior that’s perfect for a glass of wine at sunset. It’s quiet, it’s memorable, and it’s a completely different way to experience the coast, with all the comforts of a Cottage, just with a much better view.
Which one is best for you?
With up to 3 dogs very welcome, either choice gives you the best of both worlds for you and your dogs. You have the most stunning river walks in either direction, directly from the gangplank. In case you’re worried, we do have Doggy life jackets on board in a range of sizes.
Onderneming sleeps 8 and is ideal for larger families or groups of friends.
Moored at the iconic Snape Maltings, this spacious Dutch Barge is perfect for families or small groups of friends to relax and catch up. Whether you’re exploring the Suffolk coast or enjoying time together on board, this one-of-a-kind retreat offers comfort, character, and plenty of room to relax. Three double bedrooms two bathrooms, and two saloon/ galleys.
Onderneming has been seen on ITV, and has appeared in The Times’ “Best Unusual Holiday Homes” and “Ten best places to stay by a river” articles. She’s also appeared on ITV’s ‘Escape to the country’.
Twee Gebroeders sleeps 4 and makes a perfect romantic getaway, or perfect for small families.
Nestled at the historic Tidemill in Woodbridge, this charming barge is an ideal escape for couples or small families. With its cosy interiors and picturesque surroundings, it’s a romantic hideaway with space for little ones too. A stone’s throw from great pubs, restaurants, a cinema, and a wealth of history. Double and twin cabins, plus shower room and saloon/ galley, with cockpit seating on deck.
Twee Gebroeders was featured in The Times’ “Love Nests: Great Places for two”. She also appeared in The Daily & Sunday Mail articles on unique floating holidays, and she has been seen on the BBC.
Floating Holiday Cottages
Both Barges are moored on quays as opposed to offering sailing holidays, so think of them as floating holiday cottages. For this reason too, they are very different to a standard cottage holiday. They are conversions of former cargo vessels and whilst they are heated, they are on rivers so are a little different to the norm.
If these look like they will float your Barge boat, then why not check the availability calendar and get yourselves booked in?
Trusted reviews
We’ve built a solid reputation for Cottage Holidays since 2009, with well in excess of 1,500 Five Star reviews on TripAdvisor, Facebook and Google.
“A perfect, unique getaway – I recently stayed on the Onderneming barge at Snape Maltings and had an unforgettable and faultless stay. The barge exceeded our expectations; it was beautiful.
The team at Woodfarm made us feel so welcome with a breakfast hamper, plenty of useful information as well as lots of homely touches such as logs for the log burner.
There are a myriad of stunning walks to wander along or you can just sit on the barge and take in the breathtaking scenery – I will never forget quietly watching a kingfisher perched on the side of the barge.
The customer service was incredibly personable and helpful. It was a 10/10 experience, I would highly recommend staying on Onderneming for a guaranteed unique and fantastic getaway.”

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Barge?
Typically a Barge is a flat-bottomed boat, primarily designed for transporting goods, especially heavy or bulky cargo. We have two Dutch Barges, which would have been used to carry various cargo around the waterways in Holland during the last century, and are now converted to enable holidaymakers to take a quirky stay in Suffolk.
Are the Woodfarm barges dog friendly?
The answer is a resounding yes, we are dog friendly! We welcome up to three dogs in each of our Barns, Cottages, and Barges and over at Woodfarm Tuscany. All our holiday properties on dry land have fully enclosed gardens, ensuring your dogs are safe and secure. Of course, the Barges are a slightly different matter, but they are equally accommodating for your furry friends.
How old are your barges?
Our grain Barges date back to the late 1800’s, making them both over 130 years old.
