Pictures vs. Presence: What holiday websites can’t show you (and why it matters)
By Carl Scott
You can edit a photo, you can wide-angle a room, but you can’t fake the atmosphere of a place when you actually step through the door.
This is another in our series of ‘Before You Book’ – a bunch of videos designed to guide you through some of the important things that are easy to miss when booking a holiday.
That’s the honest truth about holiday marketing. I think we’ve all done it. You spend hours scrolling through beautiful images online, looking at perfect lighting, or checking off lists of physical features like hot tubs, log burners, and square footage. But honestly, the thing is, you’re not booking a list of specifications. You’re booking an experience. What we’re all actually searching for when we plan a break is a very specific feeling: warmth, genuine privacy, and character.
To be fair, it’s easy to make a room look immaculate on a screen. But a camera can’t capture what I call the presence of a space. It can’t show you how it feels when you walk into a barn and realise those oak timbers have been standing there for hundreds of years. It can’t show you the unique tranquillity of sitting on the deck of a Dutch barge at dawn, listening to the water lap against the hull while the rest of the world is still asleep. Those aren’t things you can measure on a floor plan, but they’re the exact things that make a holiday stay with you long after you’ve gone home.
How does the place really feel?
Over the years at Woodfarm, I’ve always believed that focusing on how a place feels matters so much more than just showing off shiny fixtures. It’s about creating an atmosphere where you can instantly drop your bags, let out a deep breath, and know you’re somewhere that has a soul. When your dog wanders in, finds a cosy corner by the hearth, and immediately drops off to sleep, that isn’t because the room has the right dimensions. It’s because the space feels safe, calm, and grounded. It’s about the peace of mind that comes from knowing the reality matches your expectations.
And honestly, that’s what really matters when you want to switch off. You need to trust that the privacy you see on a screen is the privacy you actually get when you arrive. You want to know you won’t be overlooked by a busy road or packed in next to hundreds of other holidaymakers. True character and tranquillity can’t be manufactured by a clever lens; they have to be built into the very fabric of the location.
Before You Book…
So, before you book your next getaway, try to look past the heavily styled, over-polished photos. Look for the honesty behind the place. Think about the atmosphere you want to wake up to and the privacy you need to actually unwind. It’s the feeling of a place that creates the memories, not the camera angles. I’d love to know what matters most to you when you first walk through the door of a holiday stay. Anyway, something to think about.
