Before You Book a Holiday, read this
By Carl Scott
Before you book any holiday anywhere, there’s one thing I think most of us are actually looking for… and it’s probably not the location, the nice view or even guaranteed sunshine. I think what we really want is to feel confident we’re making the right choice. And honestly, I get that.
Because booking a break away should feel exciting. You’re thinking about switching off for a few days, spending time with your partner, family or friends, taking the dog somewhere different, or just escaping normal life for a bit.
But there’s so much choice now, isn’t there?

I think people have become much more careful about booking holidays, and I don’t blame them. We read reviews, compare photos, zoom into pictures trying to work out what places are really like and ask questions we probably wouldn’t have thought about years ago.
Although… sometimes we overthink the whole thing and end up not booking anything at all.
We’re all guilty of that with plenty of things.
Anyway, that’s partly why I’ve started something called Before You Book.
The idea is really simple.
Every week I’m going to do a short video about something people often wonder about before choosing a holiday. Not because I think holidays should be over-analysed, and definitely not because I want to slow anyone down from booking. Actually, quite the opposite.
I think when people feel informed and reassured, they often make decisions more confidently… and sometimes more quickly too. One thing I’ve learnt after decades in this industry is that people rarely remember every feature somewhere had. People don’t usually come home saying, “The kitchen had excellent cupboard space,” or, “I was particularly impressed with the dimensions of the bedroom.”
What people remember is how the place made them feel inside, I mean properly “feel”.
Whether they relaxed.
Whether they switched off.
Whether the dog settled quickly.
Whether they slept well.
Whether they’d go back.
That’s the stuff that sticks.
And I think businesses, especially in hospitality, spend a lot of time listing features without always talking about why those things matter.
Take a secure garden for example. On paper, it’s just a secure garden. In reality, for some people, it means sitting outside with a coffee and not worrying where the dog’s disappeared to.
Privacy sounds like a selling point. But often what people actually mean is: Can I properly relax here?
A countryside location isn’t only about pretty scenery either. Sometimes it’s the first bit of proper peace and quiet somebody’s had in months.
Those little things matter more than we sometimes realise.
So B4U BOOK is really just me sharing thoughts, answers and useful things people often ask before choosing a break away.
No scare tactics, no hard sell, and no pretending every holiday involves skipping through fields in slow motion looking delighted with life.
Just honest conversations about things worth knowing. Because if you’re spending money on time away, I think feeling confident about your choice matters.
Anyway, that’s what Before You Book is all about.
I’d genuinely be interested to know: what’s something you always check before booking a holiday? Because there’s a good chance if you’ve wondered about it, lots of other people have too. And if enough people ask, I’m happy to shoot a video about it.
Frequently Asked Questions About Booking a Holiday
What does “dog friendly” actually mean when booking a holiday?
That’s a good question because dog friendly means different things in different places. Sometimes it means dogs are allowed; sometimes it means dogs are genuinely welcomed. At Woodfarm, dogs have always been part of what we do, so secure gardens, dog-friendly pubs nearby, walks and practical things like tiled floors in places matter. We think the real question isn’t, “Can I bring my dog?” but “Will my dog, and therefore I, actually relax?”
How important are reviews when choosing a holiday?
Reviews are useful because they often tell you things photos can’t. People talk about how somewhere felt, whether they slept well, whether it was peaceful or whether they’d return. We’d always suggest reading a mixture of reviews rather than only looking at star ratings. Patterns matter more than individual opinions. If lots of guests mention relaxing, privacy or returning again, that usually says something important.
Are holiday photos ever misleading?
Professional photos are part of marketing, but they should still represent reality. A good thing to ask yourself is: does the business show plenty of photos, videos and different angles? At Woodfarm, we use lots of images and virtual tours because we’d rather guests know exactly what they’re booking. We think surprises are best left for birthdays, not holidays.
How do I know if somewhere will actually feel relaxing?
Relaxation means different things to different people. For some it’s privacy; for others it’s peace and quiet, a secure garden for the dog, a hot tub or simply not having a packed itinerary. We think looking beyond facilities helps. Ask: how will this place fit the break I actually want? A holiday can tick every box on paper and still not feel right.
What’s the one thing people should check before booking a holiday?
The obvious answer might be location or price, but we’d say: check whether the place feels like it suits you. The right holiday for one person might be completely wrong for another. Read reviews, look at photos, ask questions and trust your instincts. Holidays aren’t only about where you stay; they’re about how you feel while you’re there and whether you leave wishing you’d booked an extra few days.
