Artisan Food & Drink in Suffolk
By Carl Scott
Suffolk is a goldmine for artisan food and drink lovers. This county is bursting with independent producers, farm shops, delis, bakeries, microbreweries, vineyards, and small‑batch creators, all crafting high‑quality, locally‑sourced goods with passion and care.
Whether you’re after handmade cheese, traditionally brewed beer, organic fruit and vegetables, rare‑breed meats, award‑winning gin, homemade chutneys, slow‑fermented sourdough, raw‑milk cheese, gin, ale, cider, craft spirits, charcuterie, patés, artisan chocolate, seasonal ice cream, smoked fish, local honey, handmade pies, preserves or brunch treats, you’ll find it all here, often just a short country lane or estuary promenade away.
What makes Suffolk’s food scene stand out is the commitment to provenance, sustainability, traceability, and a strong farm‑to‑table ethos. Many of the region’s best‑known artisan producers use ingredients grown or reared right here on Suffolk soil. From pasture‑fed dairy herds producing raw‑milk cheeses to heritage orchards giving rise to pressed juices and cider, this landscape is steeped in quality, flavour, and authenticity.
For guests staying at Woodfarm Barns, Cottages, or Barges, the options for sampling Suffolk’s artisan delights are endless. Pick up fresh bread and cakes, enjoy smoked fish or charcuterie from a deli, sip on locally distilled spirits, craft beer or cider, and bring it back to unwind in the comfort of your holiday property. Whether planning a romantic Suffolk picnic, a cosy night in with regional nibbles, or a foodie road trip along the coast, there’s something to delight every palate—and plenty of perfect pairings for artisan cheese, gin, wine, beer or cider.
Here are a few of our favourite places to experience artisan food and drink in Suffolk.
Earsham Street Deli – Bungay & Snape Maltings
Our go‑to deli emporium, Earsham Street Deli has been a Woodfarm partner for years. Their original store on Earsham Street in Bungay is packed with local cheeses, cured meats, patés, preserves, artisan breads, chocolates, antipasti, and gluten‑aware treats . In September 2022 they opened a second branch at Snape Maltings—perfectly positioned just a minute’s walk from our barge Onderneming—stocking the same outstanding range of artisan and local delicacies, open daily .
Alder Carr Farm – Needham Market
Alder Carr Farm grows and picks its own fruit, crafting seasonal “fruit cream ices” using traditional methods. Rich, creamy, and intensely fruity, these small‑batch treats are a Suffolk summer classic. And just 10 minutes away from Woodfarm HQ, this is an absolute must, Particularly as they have a fab coffee shop there too.
Fen Farm Dairy – Bungay
Home of the award‑winning Baron Bigod, Fen Farm Dairy produces a raw‑milk Brie‑style cheese using Montbéliarde milk. Lush, creamy, and complex, it’s a true artisan standout—perfect with a chunk of sourdough and a sip of local rosé or ale.
Adnams Brewery – Southwold
Founded in 1872, Adnams continues to balance tradition with innovation. Sample Ghost Ship pale ale, crisp Copper House gin, or join a guided brewery distillery tour. Their coastal shop and café near the docks make it a destination for craft beer, gin enthusiasts, and coastal wanderers alike.
Friday Street Farm – Near Snape Maltings
The multi‑award‑winning Friday Street Farm Shop, in‑house butchery, cheese room, café, and seasonal PYO fruit farm—all by the Blyth family since the 1970s. Earth‑to‑plate ethics shine through in their pies, charcuterie, home‑cooked meals, and even quirky local “weird” produce selections.
The Suffolk Food Hall – Orwell Bridge
This riverside gem that is the Suffolk Food Hall, is the ultimate one‑stop farm shop, stocking meat, cheese, bread, beer, wine, cider, fresh produce and more—all from Suffolk’s best artisan makers. The café offers sweeping views and truly local cooking.
Emmett’s Smokehouse – Peasenhall
Established in 1820 and still operating from the original premises in Peasenhall, Emmett’s is the oldest artisan ham and bacon producer in the UK. They cure and smoke hams and back bacon—most famously their black porter‑marinated Suffolk Black Ham—using traditional natural curing methods and no artificial nitrates.
Their on-site café also serves fine foods and is a lovely stop during a Suffolk day out.
The Artisan Smokehouse – Falkenham
Since 2010, Tim & Gill have been smoking and dry‑curing premium meats, fish (including salmon), cheese, olives, and bespoke hampers from their rural Suffolk smokehouse near the coast. Their multi-award‑winning methods include maple‑wood smoking and eco‑packaging; they now focus on small‑batch hampers and online orders.
Taste of East Anglia – Long Melford
Held each June at Kentwell Hall, this annual food & drink festival brings together around eighty artisan producers—everything from craft ales and sparkling wine to handmade sausages, sourdough, local video demos, and kitchen theatre sessions.
Emmett’s of Peasenhall, Palfrey & Co, Pinneys of Orford
We also regularly feature Palfrey & Co (long‑standing suppliers to Woodfarm), signature charcuterie-makers; and Pinneys of Orford, famed for shellfish, oysters, and seafood platters. Plus Emmett’s of Peasenhall is, of course, the celebrated smokehouse above.
