Orford quay, castle and the Pump Street Bakery

This blog post introduces you to a video that I shot to tell you about Orford quay, castle and the Pump Street Bakery. It’s also part of our You Ask, We Answer series, where we answer tons of FAQ’s and give you lots of information to help you get the most out of Suffolk.

At Woodfarm Barns & Barges, we understand that planning the perfect getaway involves many questions and uncertainties. To help you navigate through these and to ensure you have the best experience possible, we’ve launched our ‘You Ask, We Answer’ initiative. This approach isn’t just about promoting our Barns, Cottages and Barges; it’s about providing valuable information, solutions, and peace of mind to our prospective guests.

Anyway, this is the video, and the transcript is below it if you wish to go back over anything.

This is what I said…

Exploring Orford: A Hidden Gem in Suffolk

Hello, it’s Carl! In this video, I take you on a journey through the charming village of Orford, which is almost on the sea, nestled in a narrow inlet along the River Ore.

Discovering Orford Quay

We start our adventure at Pinneys of Orford, a well-known fishmonger and fish smoker that has become a staple in the area. Their operations at the Orford Quay are famous, and they serve up delicious seafood that is beloved throughout the region. As we take in the views, you’ll notice the picturesque river trips available, with local operators providing scenic excursions and lunch cruises.

The Mouth of the River Ore

Looking out toward the sea, you can see the mouth of the River Ore transitioning into the River Alde, which flows toward Aldeburgh. It’s remarkable to navigate these waters, especially when you consider the challenges of bringing a 120-ton Barge through such a small fishing channel!

Orford has a rich military history, having played a role in testing detonators during the war. This little spot is full of intriguing stories and history, making it a popular destination.

Meeting the Locals

While in Orford, I had the pleasure of chatting with a local resident enjoying the scenery. He shared his love for the area, particularly the peaceful moments spent by the water. It’s always enlightening to hear firsthand accounts of life in such a unique place, especially from baby seagulls.

The Tea Rooms and More

As we continue our tour, we arrive at the local tea rooms. This rustic spot is popular for its cosy atmosphere, offering delightful teas, coffees, and tasty snacks. On a grey day, there’s nothing quite like stopping in for a warm drink!

Parking is easy, and it’s just a short walk to the quay from the nearby car park.

Exploring the Village

Moving beyond the quay, we venture into the village itself. Orford is known for its charming red-brick buildings covered in ivy, giving it a picturesque, old-world feel. One of its most famous attractions is Pump Street Bakery, renowned for its fine chocolate. Just a stone’s throw away is the Orford Oysterage, a well-known restaurant that delights visitors with fresh seafood.

Orford Castle: A Historical Landmark

As we approach the edge of the village, we find Orford Castle, now managed by English Heritage. The castle is well worth a visit, offering stunning views and a glimpse into the area’s history. I fondly remember a day spent there with my daughter, who had a rather imaginative playtime involving her Barbie dolls!

Conclusion

Orford is a beautiful village that encapsulates the charm of Suffolk, with its history, delightful food, and friendly locals. I hope you’ve enjoyed this glimpse into Orford!
