This is what I said…

Discovering Kersey: The Birthplace of Woodfarm Barns, Cottages, and Barges

Hello, it’s Carl here! Today, I want to take you on a journey to a special place called Kersey, a tiny village nestled in the heart of Suffolk. This picturesque location holds a significant place in my heart, as it’s where the idea for Woodfarm all began. Let me show you around and share the story of my very first Holiday Cottage.

A Hidden Gem in Suffolk

Kersey is a charming village, seemingly frozen in time, with just a few houses, a pub, and not much else. What makes it so unique is its secluded nature. The village is accessible via a winding road that descends a steep hill, leading to a Ford known as “The Splash,” where the road is permanently wet. After crossing The Splash, the road climbs back up the other side of the hill, making the village feel like a hidden gem tucked away in the Suffolk countryside.

My First Holiday Cottage: Where Woodfarm Began

On the left-hand side of the road, just past a hedge, sits my very first Holiday Cottage. It’s a small, quaint building that was once a Bakery. This Cottage is where the idea for Woodfarm germinated and eventually took shape. The building itself is quite simple, with one room downstairs that serves as an open kitchen, dining, and Lounge area. The original bread ovens, built into the wall, are still there, serving as a charming feature that adds to the Cottage’s cosy atmosphere.

Upstairs, you’ll find a tiny bedroom and bathroom, making it a perfect retreat for those seeking a peaceful getaway. The Cottage also has a small Courtyard Garden, which was always popular with guests, particularly because of its prime location in Kersey.

The Appeal of Kersey

Despite its small size, Kersey attracts a lot of tourists, especially during the summer. Coachloads of visitors, including many from abroad, come to this village to take photographs, capturing the timeless beauty of this Suffolk treasure. My first Holiday Cottage has likely found its way into numerous photo albums around the world!

A Dream House in Kersey

As we continue our tour, let me show you a house that I always dreamed of owning. It’s a stunning, old house located right by the river that forms The Splash. The house had been empty and falling into disrepair for years, with its walls crumbling and damp due to its proximity to the river. Although it eventually went up for sale, I couldn’t afford it, but I always admired its beauty and potential. Today, I believe it has been restored as a private residence.

Visiting Kersey

Kersey is well worth a visit, especially if you’re staying at Woodfarm Barns, Cottages, or Barges. It’s about a half-hour drive from Woodfarm, nestled between Hadleigh and Lavenham. The village’s colourful buildings, such as the pink and ochre houses, are quintessentially Suffolk and add to the village’s charm.
