Bonsai care

How do we care for Elmer, the Woodfarm Bonsai?

This blog post introduces you to a video that I shot to answer the question “How do we care for Elmer, the Woodfarm Bonsai?”

Hello and welcome to Bonsai Buddies with me, Carl, and my little friend here, Elmer, the Japanese Elm. Ignore my flappy curtain in the background—I’ve got the patio doors open for some fresh air. Today, I’m going to show you how I water my bonsai every day and give Elmer a little haircut.

Daily Watering Routine

Tools Needed:

  • Watering can
  • Bonsai mist spray

First things first, let’s tackle the issue of watering. What you need is a watering can. Give your bonsai a good soaking, but be careful not to overdo it. Overwatering can lead to root rot, which we definitely want to avoid.

Every few days, I also use some bonsai mist. This is a nutrient-rich spray that helps keep the bonsai healthy. Think of it as pizza for bonsais—though I’m not sure why I said pizza, but you get the idea. A little spritz here and there, and your bonsai will be happy.

Trimming the Bonsai

Now, let’s move on to trimming. It’s important to give your bonsai a little haircut now and then to keep it in shape.

Steps for Trimming:

  1. Assess the tree: Look at the overall shape and decide where it needs a trim.
  2. Trim sparingly: Clip a few leaves and branches here and there. Don’t overdo it—just a little to maintain its shape.
  3. Observe the bonsai: After trimming, check to see if it looks balanced and healthy.

Some might argue that trimming should come before misting, but this is how I do it. Elmer seems happy with this routine—he tells me every morning. Yes, I talk to my bonsai, and in my imagination, he replies!

Final Thoughts

Caring for a bonsai is quite therapeutic. It might seem boring to some, but I find it relaxing and rewarding. Remember, the key to a happy bonsai is regular care and attention.

Thank you for joining me and Elmer today. If you have any questions or need more bonsai tips, feel free to reach out. Happy gardening!
