DAY ONE: Sutton Hoo, Woodbridge, and The Unruly Pig
Sutton Hoo
Start your day at the iconic Sutton Hoo, one of the most significant archaeological sites in the UK. This awe-inspiring Anglo-Saxon royal burial ground is steeped in history, and the interactive exhibits in the visitor centre make it easy to imagine life in the 7th century. Guided tours bring fascinating details to life, from the famous burial ship to the treasures uncovered during the dig. As you wander the estate, take in the serene Suffolk countryside and stop by the observation tower for a bird’s-eye view of the site.
If you’re travelling with kids, they’ll love the trails with scavenger hunts and hands-on activities designed to spark their curiosity about history.
Woodbridge Tide Mill Museum
After Sutton Hoo, head to the charming riverside town of Woodbridge to explore the Tide Mill Museum. One of the last working tide mills in the UK, this unique attraction offers a window into the industrial heritage of Suffolk. Watch the water wheel in action (check the tide times!), learn how flour was ground, and hear stories about the mill’s historic role in the community.
Stroll along the picturesque River Deben before making your way to lunch. The riverside walk is a lovely spot for photos, with colourful boats bobbing in the harbour and wildlife all around.
Lunch at The Crown, Woodbridge
The Crown in Woodbridge is the perfect lunch stop. This chic gastropub offers a menu brimming with seasonal dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients. Treat yourself to a Suffolk specialty like fresh seafood or enjoy a lighter bite paired with a local cider or ale. With its relaxed ambience and attentive service, it’s a crowd-pleaser for couples, families, and groups alike.
Woodbridge Shopping and Exploring
Spend the early afternoon exploring Woodbridge’s delightful independent shops, from antique stores to boutiques offering unique finds. The town is also home to several art galleries showcasing local talent. If you’re interested in a bit more history, make a quick stop at St. Mary’s Church, an impressive medieval building with beautiful stained glass windows and an atmospheric graveyard.
Dinner at The Unruly Pig
In the evening, head to The Unruly Pig in Bromeswell, just a short drive from Woodbridge. Consistently ranked among the UK’s best gastropubs, The Unruly Pig is renowned for its creative dishes and warm, inviting atmosphere. The seasonal menu features a mix of British classics with Italian flair, and every dish is expertly crafted. Be sure to try their signature pork dishes or one of their perfectly executed vegetarian options. The wine list is extensive, and the desserts are an indulgent end to a day well spent.
DAY TWO: Dedham Vale and Flatford Mill
Dedham Vale
Start your day immersed in the natural beauty of Dedham Vale, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that inspired the works of artist John Constable. Begin with a leisurely riverside walk along the River Stour. If you’re feeling adventurous, rent a rowboat or paddleboard for a tranquil glide through the countryside – a wonderful way to soak in the scenery.
As you walk or paddle, look out for wildlife such as swans, ducks, and kingfishers, and enjoy the peaceful sounds of nature. The small village of Dedham, with its picturesque streets and historic architecture, is a great place to pause for a coffee or snack.
Flatford Mill
From Dedham, make your way to Flatford Mill, a National Trust site and the heart of Constable Country. Explore the beautiful landscape that inspired Constable’s most famous paintings, like The Hay Wain. Guided tours provide insight into Constable’s life and the rich history of the area.
The on-site museum offers interactive displays, original artwork, and details about Constable’s techniques and inspirations. Afterward, wander the walking trails that connect Flatford Mill to other key spots in the area, such as Willy Lott’s Cottage, which feels like stepping into a painting.
Lunch at The Sun Inn, Dedham
For lunch, head back to Dedham to dine at The Sun Inn, a beloved 15th-century coaching inn. This cosy spot blends traditional charm with a modern menu that celebrates fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The slow-cooked meats, fresh fish dishes, and hearty desserts often earn rave reviews. It’s the perfect place to relax and recharge before your afternoon adventures.
Dedham Art and Craft Centre
Spend your afternoon exploring the Dedham Art and Craft Centre. Housed in a converted church, the centre features an eclectic collection of handmade items, from pottery and textiles to paintings and jewellery. This is a great spot to pick up unique souvenirs or gifts while supporting local artists and craftsmen.
Optional Afternoon Tea
If you’re not ready to leave Dedham just yet, consider stopping for afternoon tea at one of the village’s charming cafes. With homemade scones, clotted cream, and a pot of tea, it’s the ideal way to unwind before heading back to your accommodation.
DAY THREE: Eye, Thornham Walks, and Helmingham Hall Gardens
Eye and Thornham Walks
Start the day in Eye, a small Suffolk town packed with history. Wander the streets and admire the old timber-framed buildings before heading up to Eye Castle. It’s not huge, but it’s perched on a little hill, giving you some cracking views over the countryside. It’s peaceful, interesting, and a great spot for a photo or two.
From there, head over to Thornham Walks, a brilliant place to stretch your legs. You’ll find miles of trails through woodlands and fields. It’s dog-friendly, so bring your four-legged friend along for the adventure. If you fancy a pit stop, the Forge Café is right there. They do great coffee, and their cakes always seem to hit the spot.
The Four Horseshoes, Thornham Magna
After your walk, stop at The Four Horseshoes, an old thatched pub that’s as cosy as they come. It’s been there since the 12th century, so they know what they’re doing. The food is proper Suffolk fare – fresh, hearty, and delicious. Whether it’s their fish and chips or a Sunday roast, you won’t leave hungry. Plus, they welcome dogs, so you can all relax and recharge for the afternoon.
Helmingham Hall Gardens
For the afternoon, head to Helmingham Hall Gardens. The place is stunning, especially in spring when everything’s starting to bloom. The gardens are full of colour, and there’s a peaceful feel as you wander around the flowerbeds and parkland. There’s even a herd of deer that sometimes make an appearance, which adds to the charm.
