Winter’s Gift: Permission to Slow Down in Suffolk
By Carl Scott
Winter in Suffolk is a soft invitation to exhale. Yes, we know that we also say this about summer, spring, and autumn, but that has more to do with our fondness and confidence in Suffolk’s charm than it does any blog writing hyperbole. In winter, the hedgerows hush, beaches open wide and the sun lowers into a long, golden lope. You don’t come to tick boxes; you come to feel your shoulders drop and your thoughts unclench. To make the case more plainly, here’s a rundown of what a perfect winter’s day can look like when you’re staying at one of our Barns or Barges for rent in Suffolk throughout the chillier months.
We’d suggest beginning things with a slow morning ritual in your Barn or Barge. This means that the kettle is singing, the log burner is happily ticking along, and the toast is neatly stacked with local marmalade. Leave these surrounds only when you’re ready to properly wander in some suitably cosy clothing. You can also choose from some delightful and varied surroundings: Woodbridge’s river path offers glows in frost; Thorpeness feels like a storybook left open on a quiet page; Southwold’s pier is perfect for a contemplative stroll, gulls wheeling like punctuation marks in a pale sky. Suffolk really is every bit as poetic as this poetic blog makes it out to be.
Once you’re out and wandering, it’s best to let the day decide. Not in some abstract and mythical way, but in the way that you should maintain an open mind to choose between browsing a small gallery, thumbing through a selection of second-hand books and antiquities, or simply following a footpath just to see where it goes. Winter really does strip away the fuss and leaves the good bones for visitors to properly enjoy. That means bracing air, friendly pubs, slow lunches. In other words, we would encourage you to pack a scarf rather than a fixed agenda. The pleasure is very much in the gentle drift from one lovely thing to the next.
Back home at your Barn or Barge, the kitchen becomes a veritable sanctuary. We’d advise simmering something fragrant while a board game gathers on the table. On our historic Barges, river light dapples as the night extends, whilst in the Barns, beams and brick make a cocoon against the early dusk. Dogs snore. People talk. Time stretches. We can tell that you’re inching towards checking the availability of our Barns and Barges for rent for a Suffolk holiday.
