Suffolk Art Trails & Creative Days Out for Couples in 2025
By Carl Scott
If your idea of a perfect day out involves a sketchbook, an open studio, or discovering local makers in tucked-away corners of the countryside, then Suffolk is calling this summer. With its golden light, big skies and inspiring landscapes, it’s long been a haven for artists and in 2025, the art scene is more vibrant than ever.
Whether you’re a creative couple yourselves, or just love to potter, browse and be inspired, Suffolk’s art trails and creative hotspots offer a slower, richer way to spend your time together. And the best part? Many of them are dog-friendly, so your four-legged sidekick can join the adventure too.
1. Suffolk Open Studios (June weekends)
Running throughout the month of June, Suffolk Open Studios is a joyful celebration of creativity. Dozens of artists throw open the doors to their home studios, from tucked-away barns to coastal workshops. You’ll find everything from landscape painting and lino printing to ceramics and glasswork. It’s a relaxed, rambling sort of day out, one where you chat to artists, see work in progress, and maybe even bring home a piece for your wall. Dogs are welcome at many venues, especially those with outdoor space.
2. The Art Safari Sketching Days, Woodbridge
Fancy getting hands-on? Join an Art Safari workshop and spend the day sketching Suffolk’s riverside wildlife, estuaries and boats. These relaxed outdoor sessions are perfect for beginners and dabblers alike, and there’s something lovely about creating together, side by side. All materials are provided, and the setting, the riverside at Woodbridge, couldn’t be more charming. Just bring a flask, a sunhat and your sense of adventure.
3. Blackthorpe Barn Craft Fair (Summer & Autumn Editions)
Not just for the festive season, Blackthorpe Barn also hosts seasonal craft fairs with artisan stalls, art exhibitions and even the odd hands-on demonstration. It’s a lovely place to browse, chat with local makers, and pick up a thoughtful keepsake. The surrounding woodland is great for a dog walk too, making it a well-rounded day out for couples who love craft and countryside in equal measure.
- The Cut Arts Centre, Halesworth
Tucked away in Halesworth, The Cut is a fantastic community arts hub with a regular calendar of exhibitions, film screenings, talks and creative workshops. Check ahead for 2025’s events where you might catch a printmaking masterclass or an evening of live jazz in a candlelit theatre. There’s a café on-site and the vibe is relaxed and welcoming, ideal for couples looking to feed their creative side.
5. Aldeburgh Gallery Trail & Coastal Artists
Aldeburgh isn’t just about fish and chips, though they’re certainly a bonus. This artistic coastal town is dotted with independent galleries and studios. Wander along the high street and discover everything from contemporary sculpture to watercolours of the Suffolk coast. Start with Thompson’s Gallery, pop into the Peter Pears Gallery, and see where the path leads. Dogs are welcome in most spots, and you’ll find plenty of cafés with water bowls and biscuits at the ready.
After a day of creative discovery, there’s no better feeling than heading back to your barn or barge. Maybe you picked up a handmade mug, or maybe you just leave with your heads full of colour and your hearts a little lighter. Either way, Suffolk’s art trails are a reminder that the best days are the ones you share, with each other, with your dog, and with the people who still make things by hand.
