Stress-Free Christmas Shopping: Ditch the Crowds
By Carl Scott
You know you have to do Christmas shopping, don’t you?
Whether or not you want to is irrelevant, you must do it, right? You don’t have a choice. It’s Christmas, and you have to buy people presents. Getting to December without a plan isn’t a strategy, it’s a countdown to panic. Get over it.
The good news is that you absolutely do have a choice about how you do it. Forget the annual frenzy; this year, turn your mandatory chore into a magical, relaxing mini-break.
Here are your three options:
1. The High Street Horror Show: Fight through the crowds in your local high street, listen to terrible music, get stressed, have a really bad time, and panic buy something forgettable just to get the hell out of there. You’ll finish the day exhausted and slightly resentful.
2. The Last-Minute Tactic: Leave it all until the 23rd of December and then go on a late-night Amazon spree, but end up buying a load of old toot that you won’t feel good about giving. If it arrives in time. (Plus, you’ll be feeding the massive machine when you could be supporting genuine small businesses.)
3. The Relax, Shop, and Rejuvenate Escape: You’ll like this one.
Book one of our two beautifully converted Dutch Barges in Woodbridge or Snape, and chill out for a few days, combining deep relaxation with some truly wonderful, thoughtful shopping at a whole host of fantastic independent retailers.
We don’t have a lot of weekend availability left between now and Christmas 2025, so if you’re reading this and you want to book two or three nights mid-week, then just get in touch with me, and I will make it happen. We will simply pro-rata the price of our usual four-night midweek break, so that you can get over to the Suffolk coast and do Christmas shopping properly.
Email carl@woodfarmbarns.com and just give me an idea of the dates you’re looking for, and I’ll get back to you. Alternatively, you can pick up the phone, as I can be quite nice.

Your Floating Base for Coastal Cheer

Our two barges are essentially floating holiday cottages, offering stunning views and unique character—the perfect antidote to the hectic high street.
- Twee Gebroeders (Woodbridge): Moored in the charming riverside town of Woodbridge, this barge offers stunning river views and is the ideal base for couples or small families (sleeping 2–4). Imagine waking up to the gentle rocking of the water before heading ashore to explore this historic town.

- Onderneming (Snape Maltings): Located in the iconic setting of Snape Maltings, this spacious barge (sleeping 6–8) puts you right in the heart of one of Suffolk’s premier destinations for arts, food, and shopping.
Both Woodbridge and Snape, as well as nearby Aldeburgh, are simply magical at this time of year. Dressed in twinkling lights, they offer a genuinely festive atmosphere that major cities simply can’t match.
The Shopping Solution
The real secret weapon of this plan is the quality of the independent shopping on offer. You’re not just avoiding the crowds; you’re securing gifts that are unique and memorable.
Snape Maltings: A Shopper’s Dream
If you’re staying on Onderneming, you only have to step off the gangplank to find a treasure trove of possibilities. Snape Maltings is a destination in itself, and you simply must visit their House & Garden store. It’s packed with beautifully curated furniture, homewares, and delightful stocking fillers that elevate gifting from a chore to a pleasure. You’ll find unique pieces you won’t see anywhere else, guaranteed to impress the recipient.
Snape Maltings is still only 20 minutes from Twee Gebroeders as well.
Gifts for the Foodie: Earsham Street DeliNo Christmas is complete without fabulous food and drink, and that’s where the superb Earsham Street Deli comes in. Located nearby, this is the place to load up on exceptional Christmas treats. Think artisan cheeses, award-winning chutneys, local spirits, and meticulously sourced hampers. A gift basket from here is far more impressive, and delicious, than any mass-produced box of chocolates. It’s authentic, indulgent, and supports local producers.
Woodbridge is ideal for Christmas shopping if you like proper independent shops instead of the usual chains. The Thoroughfare and Market Hill are lined with small local businesses selling everything from clothes and jewellery to homeware, gifts, books, and food. You’ll find places like long-standing family-run menswear shops, artisan home stores, and quirky boutiques where the people behind the counter actually know their products. It’s the sort of town where you can pick up genuinely thoughtful presents, not mass-produced stuff you see everywhere else.
What makes it stand out is the atmosphere; it still feels like a real market town. You can spend a few hours browsing, grab a coffee, and do all your Christmas shopping without setting foot in a retail park. It’s local, personal, and a proper antidote to online shopping.
By planning your shopping around a Suffolk coast break, you get to slow down, secure meaningful gifts, and explore picturesque towns free from big-city stress. As an added bonus, you’ll be supporting local, independent businesses, ensuring Jeff Bezos won’t get any of your money this Christmas.
Winner, winner, turkey dinner!
