Livorno, near Woodfarm Tuscany

This blog post introduces you to a video that I shot specifically for our place in Tuscany, to highlight the city of Livorno. It’s also part of our You Ask, We Answer series, where we answer tonnes of FAQs and give you lots of information to help you get the most out of your Tuscan stay with us.

At Woodfarm Barns & Barges, we understand that planning the perfect getaway involves many questions and uncertainties. To help you navigate through these and to ensure you have the best experience possible, we’ve launched our ‘You Ask, We Answer’ initiative. This approach isn’t just about promoting our Barns, Cottages and Barges; it’s about providing valuable information, solutions, and peace of mind to our prospective guests.

Anyway, this is the video, and the transcript is below it if you wish to go back over anything.

This is what I said…

Exploring Livorno: Italy’s Hidden Coastal Gem

Livorno, one of Italy’s largest ports, is a fascinating destination located just south of Pisa. While often overshadowed by its more famous neighbours, Livorno offers a unique charm, blending historical significance with coastal beauty. In this post, I’ll share my experiences from visiting Livorno and what makes it worth adding to your travel itinerary.

A Coastal City with a Rich History

Livorno began as a fishing port and has evolved into a bustling hub with plenty to explore. Its history is reflected in landmarks like the Old Fort and the remnants of its maritime industry. Today, Livorno is often called the “New Venice,” though not due to any sinking foundations! Instead, it earns this title thanks to its network of canals and historic charm.

The Stunning Seafront and Boardwalk

One of Livorno’s most captivating features is its grand Boardwalk. The checkerboard-patterned promenade stretches along the coast, offering scenic views and plenty of room for a leisurely stroll. Even on a grey windy day, as it was when I visited, the waves crashing against the shore and the striking architecture make for an unforgettable experience.

Along the seafront, you’ll also find the Grand Palace Hotel, an iconic building that adds to Livorno’s timeless elegance. Whether you visit during the bustling summer season or the quieter off-season, the Boardwalk offers a peaceful escape.

The Old Fishing Port and Modern Marina

Livorno still retains some of its traditional fishing roots. At the Old Fishing Port, you’ll find both vintage and modern vessels – a testament to the city’s evolving maritime industry. While I couldn’t explore the area in-depth during my recent visit, it remains a highlight of Livorno’s character and history.

Worth the Stop

While I wouldn’t recommend making a lengthy detour to visit Livorno, it’s an excellent stopover if you’re travelling to or from the airport or exploring nearby cities like Pisa, Lucca, or Florence. The blend of coastal beauty, historical landmarks, and that iconic Boardwalk makes it a worthwhile addition to your journey.
