Creating the Perfect Dog-Friendly Picnic in Suffolk
By Carl Scott
There’s something gloriously simple about a picnic. Just you, your favourite person, your dog (who always knows when the food’s involved), and a peaceful Suffolk setting. Whether you’re spread out in a meadow, tucked beneath a shady tree, or overlooking the sea, picnicking is one of the best ways to slow down and soak up the good life.
And here in Suffolk, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to scenic spots and local produce. So, if you’re staying with us in one of our dog-friendly Barns or Barges for rent, and fancy a little al fresco adventure, here’s how to create the perfect picnic, four paws and all.
Step 1: Pick Your Spot
Suffolk’s countryside and coast offer countless picnic-perfect settings. Here are a few favourites:
- Dunwich Heath – Quiet, colourful and close to the sea. Dogs love the space and you’ll love the views.
- Thornham Walks – With shady woodland trails and open fields, it’s great for a gentle pre- or post-picnic stroll.
- Christchurch Park, Ipswich – More urban but beautifully kept, with wide lawns and shady spots perfect for lounging.
- Shingle Street – Rugged and remote, ideal for couples who want something wild and windswept with their sandwiches.
Wherever you go, remember to pack a blanket, keep dogs on leads where required, and leave no trace behind, we like to keep Suffolk lovely.
Step 2: Pack the Good Stuff
This isn’t just any picnic, this is a Woodfarm-style feast. Think proper bread, local cheeses, homemade sausage rolls, and maybe a slice of something sweet.
Swing by a nearby farm shop before you go (The Hog & Hen or Alder Carr Farm are great picks), and fill your basket with Suffolk goodies like:
- Suffolk Gold or Baron Bigod cheese
- Local chutneys and jams
- Fresh strawberries in season
- A bottle of English sparkling or a posh soft drink
Don’t forget a bowl and fresh water for your pup, and maybe a dog-friendly treat or two so they’re not eyeing up your pork pie the entire time.
Step 3: Keep it Dog-Friendly
Not all picnics are created equal, especially in a dog’s eyes. Make yours pup-approved by:
- Bringing a chew or toy to keep them occupied
- Choosing a quiet spot away from busy paths and roads
- Avoiding food that’s harmful to dogs (no grapes or chocolate within sniffing distance!)
- Letting them stretch their legs before settling down
They’ll likely spend the picnic lounging in the shade, watching squirrels, and occasionally sticking their nose in the hamper just in case.
Step 4: Make a Day of It
A picnic is the perfect way to break up a lazy day exploring Suffolk. Pair it with a short walk, a paddle in a stream, or a visit to one of our dog-welcoming villages like Southwold or Eye. When you’re ready to head home, your Barn or Barge will be waiting for a post-picnic nap (for all of you).
So grab the basket, don’t forget the dog, and enjoy one of life’s simplest, and most joyful, pleasures. Suffolk sunshine, lovely food, and no timetable at all.
