Couples Who Hike Together: Suffolk’s Best Scenic Dog Walks
By Carl Scott
What’s better than a countryside walk with your favourite person? Nothing, probably. Doing it with your dog trotting happily alongside you only improves the occasion, of course. Whether you’re staying in one of our cosy Barns for rent or aboard one of our charming Barges for rent, Suffolk has a walk for every couple. From gentle woodland wanders to bracing coastal hikes, we’ve gathered a list of the best spots to explore as well as some of the best dog-friendly trails to ramble along.
- Dunwich Heath and Beach
If windswept romance is your thing, you’ll fall head over heels for Dunwich. With miles of heathland blanketed in purple heather and golden gorse, plus a dog-friendly beach to boot, this National Trust spot is a dream for walkers. There are well-marked trails and plenty of places to stop and soak in the sea air. Your four legged friend can run free, you can hold hands, and together you’ll feel miles away from it all. - Thetford Forest – High Lodge Trails
For woodland lovers, Thetford Forest offers a leafy retreat full of quiet paths and shaded trails. The walking routes range from short and sweet to longer loops that let you properly stretch your legs. Dogs are welcome throughout, and there’s even a dedicated dog agility area if you fancy letting them show off. Pack a flask and make a day of it, you can count on your pooch remembering this one for a long time. - Southwold to Walberswick Circular Walk
This one’s a firm favourite with our guests due to its sublime mix of seaside charm, marshland beauty and proper pub stops. Start in Southwold, stroll past the beach huts, then take the foot ferry across the River Blyth to Walberswick. After a bite (The Anchor does lovely food if you’re looking for recommendations), head back across the bridge for a loop walk full of big skies and even bigger views. It’s about 5 miles in total and completely dog-friendly.
- Flatford and Dedham Vale
Fancy walking in a painting? This route through Constable Country is as romantic as it gets. Follow the river from Flatford Mill towards Dedham, surrounded by meadows, water meadows and willow-lined banks. The terrain is gentle, the views are picture-perfect, and the pubs in Dedham are a welcome treat at the halfway point. Just keep your dog on the lead near livestock and enjoy the slower pace. - Thornham Walks, near Eye
Perfect for a peaceful afternoon ramble, Thornham offers a variety of waymarked trails through woodland and parkland. There are sculptures to spot, wildflowers in spring and golden leaves in autumn. Dogs are welcome off-lead in many areas, and the on-site café has water bowls and dog treats on hand, making for a lovely touch after a good walk.
Once you’ve ticked off the day’s walk, there’s nothing better than returning to your Barn or Barge for rent in Suffolk. Throw your boots by the door, pop the kettle on (or open the wine), and curl up with your dog at your feet. At Woodfarm, we believe your four-legged friend deserves the holiday just as much as you do, and we think Suffolk’s countryside offers the perfect playground.
