Cosy Fireside Nights: Board Games & Wine Pairings
By Carl Scott
When the sun dips early and there’s a chill in the air, there’s no better place to be than tucked up in one of our Barns or Barges for rent, fire crackling, slippers on, and your favourite person beside you. Add a bottle of something nice, a few snacks, and a board game or two, and you’ve got yourself a night to remember.
Here at Woodfarm Barns and Barges, we believe the little things make all the difference. So we’ve put together a few of our favourite board games to bring along (or borrow), with a cheeky wine pairing to match the mood. It’s the perfect way to while away an evening after a bracing Suffolk walk, all without stepping outside your front door.
1. Scrabble & Merlot
A classic fireside game that’s as competitive or relaxed as you make it. Settle in with a glass of velvety Merlot, smooth, comforting, and just the thing for pondering your next triple word score. This is one for word lovers, slow sippers, and those who like their evenings just a little bit smug.
2. Cluedo & Rioja
Murder, mystery, and just enough drama to keep things interesting. Cluedo is brilliant for couples and it’s all about logic, bluffing, and a little theatrical flair. Pair it with a bold Rioja, rich with dark fruit and spice. Was it Professor Plum in the study… or your other half with the wine glass?
3. Ticket to Ride & Sauvignon Blanc
A slightly longer game that’s great for pairs, Ticket to Ride takes you on a rail adventure across Europe (or America, if you fancy). It’s full of strategy, but easy to learn. Pair with a crisp, zingy Sauvignon Blanc, light, refreshing, and perfect for channeling your inner explorer.
4. Trivial Pursuit & English Sparkling Wine
You might not always agree on the answers, but that’s all part of the fun. Trivial Pursuit is ideal for a longer evening of laughter, surprises and the odd proud fist-pump. Toast your victories (or console your defeats) with a glass of English fizz, something local from Suffolk or nearby, if you can.
5. Dobble & Whatever’s Open
Only got twenty minutes before the cheese runs out? Dobble is fast, funny and surprisingly addictive. It doesn’t need strategy, just quick eyes and a bit of silliness. Pair with… well, whatever bottle you’ve already cracked open by that point. It’s chaos, but charming chaos.
No games night is complete without a few nibbles (cheese, always), a soft blanket for draping, and a dog curled up nearby watching the pieces move. Most of our Barns and Barges have bookshelves, games, and cosy corners built for long, lazy evenings just like this. All you need to bring is the wine.
So whether you’re solving mysteries, scoring big, or just arguing over the rules, a cosy fireside night is one of our favourite ways to spend time together. No screens. No rush. Just the glow of the fire and the occasional cry of “you made that word up!”
