A Guide to Winter Events and Festivals in Suffolk

By

If you’ve read any of our previous blogs, you’ll know that we’re well aware of just how lucky we are in Suffolk. From various historic towns and villages, to plenty of traditions and things to see and do, we’re excited to recommend the best the county has to offer to guests of our Barns and Barges for rent. When it comes to winter, we’re suitably spoiled with the following events and festivals.

1. Lavenham Winter Lantern Parade

The mediaeval village of Lavenham, with its iconic timber-framed houses, is somewhere we like to shout about at any opportunity. Winter is no exception, and its annual Winter Lantern Parade is a perfect example of why Lavenham is so worth visiting. Local families and artists craft intricate lanterns, which illuminate the winding streets in a procession filled with music and classic Christmas cheer. The event culminates with a festive gathering in the market square, where visitors can enjoy hot drinks, mince pies, and carol singing. What’s not to love?

2. Suffolk Food Hall Christmas Market

For foodies, the Suffolk Food Hall near Ipswich is a must-visit during the winter season. Its annual Christmas market showcases the best of Suffolk’s local produce, from handcrafted cheeses and charcuterie to sweet treats and mulled wine. The market also features craft stalls, making it an ideal spot to pick up unique gifts while indulging in festive flavours. It really does bring together the very best of everything.

3. Thorpeness Winter Wassail

One of Suffolk’s quirkier winter traditions, the Thorpeness Winter Wassail celebrates the ancient practice of singing to the apple trees to ensure a fruitful harvest. This lively event includes music, dancing, and plenty of mulled cider to keep spirits high. Wassailers don traditional garb and parade through the village, creating a vibrant spectacle that combines folklore with modern-day fun. If you want to find out more about the more ancient winter traditions which take place in Suffolk, be sure to take a look at our recent blog.

4. Snape Maltings Christmas Concerts

For those who prefer a cultural touch to their winter festivities, Snape Maltings is the place to be. Known for its world-class concert hall, this venue hosts a series of Christmas concerts ranging from choral performances to orchestral works. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Alde Estuary, Snape Maltings offers an elegant way to enjoy the season while supporting the arts. A real win-win.

5. New Year’s Day Dip at Southwold

Brave the cold and start the New Year with a splash at the Southwold New Year’s Day Dip. This annual tradition sees locals and visitors take a quick plunge into the icy North Sea to raise funds for charity. While it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted, the event is a brilliant way to shake off the holiday cobwebs and embrace the new year with gusto. Go on, we dare you…

From twinkling lanterns in historic villages to music and folklore, Suffolk’s winter events offer something for everyone. Whether you’re looking to immerse yourself in festive cheer or enjoy a cultural escape, this picturesque county is the perfect winter destination. Be sure to take a look at the current availability of our Barns and Barges for rent to make sure you enjoy the best of Suffolk whilst staying in outstanding comfort (if we do say so ourselves).
