10 Cosy Suffolk Walks to Enjoy This Autumn from Woodfarm Barns
By Carl Scott
There’s no getting away from the fact that Autumn is without doubt one of the best times to explore Suffolk on foot. The air is crisp, the fields glow with shades of amber and russet that even Constable would have struggled to accurately represent, and hedgerows burst with berries and rosehips. In short, it’s nothing short of an idyllic place. What’s more, from our Barns and Barges for rent in Suffolk, our guests are ideally placed to head out into the countryside or along the coast for walks that will leave them feeling both refreshed and inspired. With this in mind, we’ve rounded up ten of our favourite cosy autumn strolls.
- Dunwich Heath
Under the management of the National Trust, Dunwich Heath is a stunning patchwork of heather, gorse and woodland that sits snugly beside the sea. In autumn, the colours shift to deep bronzes and golds, while the chill sea breeze brings out a bracing freshness. Altogether, it’s a peaceful place for a slow wander, with the sound of waves as your soundtrack. - Southwold to Walberswick
This classic Suffolk walk is perfect in autumn when the summer crowds have thinned out a little. You’re able to cross the bridge or take the charming rowing boat ferry across the River Blyth, then wander into Walberswick’s marshes and dunes. The estuary views in the soft golden light of October are simply unforgettable, making this walk something of an unmissable route. - Rendlesham Forest
Though best known for its UFO tale, Rendlesham Forest is also a fantastic autumn destination for a lengthy ramble. Pine needles carpet the ground, fungi sprout at the base of trees, and if you’re lucky, you might spot deer darting between trunks (or little green men coming down to visit). - Flatford & Dedham Vale
Made famous by the aforementioned John Constable, this landscape looks even more painterly in autumn. The River Stour reflects copper-coloured trees, and the meadows are alive with migrating birds preparing for winter, summoning everything you need to meaningfully describe a destination as “picturesque”. - Framlingham Castle Walk
A pleasant loop around the mere at Framlingham Castle is particularly atmospheric at this time of year. Mist often rises from the water, and the medieval towers loom dramatically against autumn skies. Real fantasy novel stuff. - Pin Mill & the Orwell Estuary
This riverside walk is fairly considered a Suffolk classic. There’s just no getting away from the fact that the Orwell is stunning at sunset, when the water glows with reflections. The Butt & Oyster pub also makes the perfect stop afterwards if you’re in need of tasty refreshments. - Ickworth Park
The rolling parkland of this National Trust estate near Bury St Edmunds is filled with ancient oaks and sweet chestnuts. Autumn means conkers underfoot and wide, sweeping views across the estate. Its proximity to the town also makes it a great place to stretch your legs ahead of sampling its various bars and restaurants. - Lavenham Village Trail
Lavenham’s crooked timber-framed houses look like something out of a fairy tale. The village trail takes you past historic highlights, made even more magical with autumn leaves lining the lanes. Ideal for that autumn holiday Instagram shot, basically. - Knettishall Heath
A wild stretch of heathland with expansive skies and rust-coloured bracken. Perfect for long dog walks and quiet contemplation – you didn’t think we’d forgotten your four legged friend, did you? - Woodfarm’s Own Lanes
Sometimes the best walks are right outside your door. Step from your Barn and follow quiet lanes lined with hedgerows, watch pheasants scatter, and breathe in the scent of woodsmoke from nearby cottages. There’s a reason we decided to settle here, after all.
After a walk, there’s nothing lovelier than returning to your Barn or Barge, lighting the warming up, and settling in with a hearty supper. That’s the essence of an autumn stay at Woodfarm.
