Bird Watching in Suffolk from our Barges
Bird Watching is wonderful form of wildlife observation and we are so fortunate to be able to offer guests a choice of two barges to stay aboard, with a twitchers heaven right from the deck!
If Bird Watching is your passion then we’d like to introduce you to some of the wonders that Suffolk has to offer. And as much of the enjoyment of Bird Watching is detecting species by ear as opposed to by sight, then the serene rivers of Suffolk offer a fabulous platform to be able to do this from.
RSPB Minsmere is a hugely popular spot and is just up the coast from our Holiday Barges, but to be honest, there are some wonderful species to spot without actually leaving the barge! At Minsmere, they have a dedicated RSPB visitor centre. It is a fabulous coastal nature reserve that’s perfect for families and you’ll see people Bird Watching at any time of the year! They have loads of activities and events there and from the visitor centre you can plot your route and get an idea of what wildlife to look out for at this stunning spot on the Suffolk Heritage coast.
There are many species to be found in Suffolk, including but by no means limited to, the Marsh Harrier, Wheatears, Meadow Pipits and Linnets, Owls, Kestrel, Swans, Geese, and very much the symbol of Bird Watching in Suffolk, the Avocet. The hand-painted tiles in the bathroom of Twee Gebroeders, our Holiday Barge in Woodbridge, feature the Avocet.
Talking of Owls, there is a cracking Owl sanctuary just around the corner from our land-based Holiday Cottages at Woodfarm Barns. The Suffolk Owl Sanctuary is a wonderful place to observe these beautiful creatures, albeit in captivity, but they are nonetheless extremely well looked after by this fabulous charity.
Other than Bird Watching from either of our holiday barges, or walking along the stunning riverbanks of the Deben and the Orwell, there are some other great spots for Twitching near us in Suffolk;
Blyth Estuary (English Nature)
Dunwich Heath (National Trust)
Languard (Suffolk Wildlife Trust)
Minsmere (RSPB as above)
Orford Ness
Walberswick (Natural England)
