Snape Maltings, Suffolk

Snape Maltings. Food & Drink shopping, plus so much more!

This blog post introduces you to a video that I shot to answer the common question of Where can we go shopping?. It’s part of our series of ‘You Ask, We Answer’ videos and blogs. They cover loads of our FAQ’s, or Frequently Asked Questions, but with a (we hope) really helpful deeper dive. This one is all about Snape Maltings.

At Woodfarm Barns & Barges, we understand that planning the perfect getaway involves many questions and uncertainties. To help you navigate through these and to ensure you have the best experience possible, we’ve launched our ‘You Ask, We Answer’ initiative. This approach isn’t just about promoting our Barns, Cottages and Barges; it’s about providing valuable information, solutions, and peace of mind to our prospective guests.

Anyway, this is the video, and the transcript is below it if you wish to go back over anything.

This is what I said…

Discover the Charm of Snape Maltings

Hello, it’s Carl! This blog post is all about Snape Maltings, one of my favourite places in Suffolk. With so much to do here, I’m excited to show you a broad selection of what Snape Maltings has to offer.

The Main Buildings and Shops

As we start our tour, you’ll notice the main buildings on the left, housing a variety of shops. One of the highlights is the mast of Onderneming, our huge Barge that forms part of our business. Snape Maltings is home to several unique shops, making it a delightful place to explore.

House and Garden Shop

Let’s begin with the House and Garden shop. It’s a vast store featuring a food hall, clothing, books, stationery, and more. The food hall is a particular favourite, offering an abundance of local produce. Stokes, a local brand, supplies a range of products including jams and chutneys, which we also provide in our breakfast baskets.

Earsham Street Delicatessen

Next, we visit the Earsham Street Delicatessen, an extension of the original shop in Bungay. This deli is a treasure trove of local products, including chutneys, jams, fresh deli items, and an extensive cheese selection. It’s the perfect place to pick up a hamper, especially if you’re staying on Onderneming or in one of our Barns.

The Café and Galleries

Snape Maltings boasts two cafés, ideal for a relaxing break. The main café, Malt, is a great spot for coffee and light meals. There are also several galleries, including a pop-up gallery that hosts visiting artists.

Onderneming: Our Barge

One of the key attractions at Snape Maltings is our Barge, Onderneming. This massive vessel features three bedrooms in all, two bathrooms, and a lower saloon with a kitchen, dining area, and a cosy wood burner. The upper saloon also has a kitchen and seating area, making it a spacious and unique place to stay.

The Plough and Sail Pub

A short walk from Onderneming, you’ll find The Plough and Sail, a fabulous dog-friendly pub offering great food and drinks. It has a lovely outdoor courtyard and a large restaurant area.

The Craft Shop and Coffee Hut

Right in front of Onderneming is the craft shop, filled with locally produced items and other interesting finds. Nearby, there’s a coffee hut, perfect for a quick takeaway coffee.

Nature and Wildlife

Snape Maltings isn’t just about shops and cafés; it’s also a haven for nature lovers. Across the river, you’ll find reed beds and marshes teeming with wildlife. It’s a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle, offering stunning views and tranquil walks.

The Concert Hall

Finally, Snape Maltings is home to the world-famous classical Concert Hall, dedicated to Benjamin Britten. The venue hosts numerous classical music events and is a cultural highlight of the area.
