A Journey Through Suffolk’s Musical Heritage

From classical composers to international chart toppers, it wouldn’t be a stretch to describe Suffolk as a county with a musical heritage which is every bit as impressive as it is diverse. Whilst current discussions regarding the musical output of Suffolk will undoubtedly focus on Ed Sheeran’s phenomenal success and his treasured castle on the hill (which is our treasured Framlingham), there’s plenty more that’s gone on and is going on around the not-so-quiet towns of our county. To shine a light on this heritage, we’ve put together a short piece journeying through the history of music in Suffolk.

Like all musical traditions, it may not come as a shock to learn that Suffolk’s roots are placed firmly in the folk tradition. Specifically, it was barn dances and sea shanties that took place in the villages and coasts respectively which marked the beginnings of Suffolk’s musical history. Whilst these genres may summon images of old worldly gatherings, you’ll only need to pop into a lively pub when staying at one of our Barns or Barges for rent to witness how these traditions are being kept well alive. What’s more, there are plenty of folk festivals throughout the year which ensure that there’s no danger of these roots being forgotten.

Similar to many other regions of England, Suffolk also made rich contributions to the world of classical music by way of Benjamin Britten. A Lowestoft boy born back in 1913, Britten composed some of the most celebrated choral and orchestral works to ever come out of the country, much less the county. Producing much of his work in the coastal town of Aldeburgh, visitors today will likely encounter music aficionados making a pilgrimage to the town to enjoy the festival or simply to soak up the surroundings which influenced the great man.

In more recent years, it has undoubtedly been the sound of electric and acoustic guitars in Suffolk which have garnered national and international attention. Namely, the work of Lowestoft rockers the Darkness and the incredible rise of Ed Sheeran have both helped put Suffolk on the global map. In addition to these household names are many up and coming talents that can be enjoyed in the venues across the county. Offering concert-goers the opportunity to be one step ahead of the next big thing, local music events in Suffolk towns have earned a reputation for being a hotbed of the country’s finest acts.

To get out and enjoy the sounds of Suffolk for yourself, be sure to take a look at the availability of our Barns and Barges for rent. Providing exceptional comfort for anyone returning from a lively rock show or gentle opera, we’re sure that we’ll provide you with exactly the kind of retreat you need after a night (or day) of music.

PS – whilst we love music, we don’t want to spoil the tranquility of Woodfarm with music in our Hot Tubs. Just sayin’.
