10 of The Best Things Couples Can Do In Bury St Edmunds

Whilst we’ve previously produced articles on all of the various activities which are available to couples, we thought it would be worth focussing in on all of the best things to see and do in Bury St Edmunds.

Affectionately and rightly described as “a jewel in the crown of Suffolk”, this historic market town has an impressive collection of bars, restaurants and grounds for couples to get stuck into.

1. Theatre Royal

For some couples, visiting a Grade 1 Theatre to watch an amazing show will be right up their street. Built way back in 1819, this theatre allows partners to start the night off by watching a phenomenal performance whilst relaxing and taking in the beautiful architecture and design of the place. It’s important to note that this is one of the few remaining theatres from the Victorian era.

2. The Apex

Another great place for entertainment can be found right in the heart of Bury St Edmunds. Hosting a variety of events, from musicals to performances spanning all kinds of genres, it’s got something for every couple to enjoy throughout the year. Located inside the Arc shopping centre, couples are also spoilt for choice when it comes to dining and drinking on either side of their event!

3. Visiting the Abbey Gardens

Another beautiful place for couples to visit in Bury St Edmunds is the Abbey Gardens. Here, couples can take a quiet meander through the gardens and appreciate all the bright, stunning flowers in full bloom in the spring and easily pass an afternoon enjoying the scenery. Complete with the remains of an old monastery, this is the perfect place to sit down and have a relaxing picnic with the other half.

4. Greene King Brewery

Even if you haven’t, heading over to Bury St Edmunds to go on a tour of the Greene King Brewery promises to make for a fantastic day out. As well as learning how their signature ales are produced, couples are invited to sample the beers and ales on offer in the Beer Café. 

5. The pubs!

Should sampling some beers at the Greene King brewery whet your appetite, there’s plenty of pubs in Bury St Edmunds where you can continue enjoying a fine range of beers and wines. You can also visit the smallest pub in Britain when you step into the Nutshell (providing there’s space, of course) and experience the ‘small pub vibe’. With the pub measuring 15 ft by 7 ft, and acknowledged by the Guinness Book of World Records, it’s hardly surprising that this is one of Bury’s most popular tourist attractions.

6. St Edmundsbury Cathedral

For some couples, visiting buildings of significant historical importance is a wonderful day out. In Bury St Edmunds, there’s a range of such buildings. One of only a handful of towns in England with a cathedral, which dates all the way back to the 11^th century, this gothic masterpiece makes for a wonderful place to explore.

7. The food

One of the most important, fundamental parts to any romantic day out is deciding where to eat. In Bury St Edmunds, there’s a variety of diverse restaurants that are sure to satisfy each and every palette. From the formal surroundings of Maison Bleue to the more relaxed vibe on offer at the Cannon Brewery, couples could easily eat out in Bury every night for a month and never get bored. 

8. Scenic Walks

Throughout Bury St Edmunds, there are countless walking routes which take couples through the history and natural beauty of the town. Of the many routes to explore, couples might consider a stroll through the Abbey Gardens, passing the Cathedral across Abbots Bridge (which dates back to the 12^th century) and through the Abbey Gate to take a look at the ruined buildings of the original monastery. Such a route would take couples past the spot where the Barons compelled King John to sign the Magna Carta in 1214.

9. The nightlife

If bars are your thing, there are a few options in Bury that make for a great couples night out. The LP and The Gym Bar, for example, are two great modern bars situated in the centre of town which are superb choices for some after hours entertainment.

10. Visiting the pictures

A staple date night activity for years, visiting the pictures is popular amongst couples for good reason. In Bury St Edmunds, couples have the choice of two fantastic cinemas. For those with a taste for chic and arty surroundings, the Abbeygate Cinema down the cobblestone streets of the older part of the town is just the thing. Alternatively, the Cineworld cinema close to the Arc is a larger and more modern venue surrounded by a fantastic range of chain and independent restaurants.
