Where to sail in Suffolk this summer

Whilst you may not be able to sail our Barges for rent in Suffolk – they’re far better equipped for luxury than performance – there are a host of boats for hire along Suffolk’s waterways that make it easy to navigate and experience everything that Suffolk has to offer. There is, after all, nothing quite so much worth doing as messing about on boats.

With a rich maritime history and so much to see along its coast and riverways, it will come as no surprise to learn that Suffolk has become a favourite destination amongst sailors of all abilities. Whether it’s gentle waters of the more testing waves of the North Sea that appeal to you, you’ll find what you’re looking for when sailing in Suffolk.

When it comes to rivers and estuaries, you’ll have no difficulty enjoying a superior sailing experience by heading to the River Orwell and River Stour. Replete with intriguing ecosystems and a rich network of rivers, there’s no danger of ever exhausting this part of Suffolk.

The River Orwell in particular is home to a stunning selection of historic sites and presents an environment that is as enjoyable to look at as it is to relax in. What’s more, the range of villages you’ll encounter along the way will offer plenty of opportunities to disembark and explore a little more of Suffolk than you might otherwise.

The River Stour is similarly striking in its composition, with serene sailing grounds that once inspired John Constable to pick up a brush and commit them to canvas. Providing access to both the Cattawade and Mistley, there are both challenging and tranquil waters to traverse, allowing you to tailor your sailing experience to your own abilities.

If you’re seeking a more adventurous sailing experience, it’s incredibly easy to access the North Sea along Suffolk’s coastline. All you’ll need to do is venture out to Lowestoft and depart from the town’s historic marina. From here, you’ll have no difficulty in immersing yourself in a world of rugged cliffs and striking coastal towns. Important to note, too, that Lowestoft has a rich maritime history that stretches back centuries.

Altogether, when sailing in Suffolk you’ll find yourself surrounded by a unique blend of history, nature, and adventure. No matter your sailing capabilities, we’re confident that you’ll be captivated by life on the water in Suffolk. Indeed, whether you’re a seasoned sailor seeking open-sea challenges or a total beginner who just fancies exploring slow and tranquil rivers, Suffolk’s collection of waterways have something to offer you.

To remain on the water after journeying across the waters, be sure to check out the availability of our Barges for rent. Alternatively, if you want to give your sea legs a rest at the end of the day, take a look at our Barns for rent.
