Thorpeness: What’s it like? You Ask, We Answer
This blog post introduces you to a video that I shot to answer the common question of “Thorpeness: What’s it like?”. It’s also part of our You Ask, We Answer series, where we answer tons of FAQ’s and give you lots of information to help you get the most out of Suffolk.
At Woodfarm Barns & Barges, we understand that planning the perfect getaway involves many questions and uncertainties. To help you navigate through these and to ensure you have the best experience possible, we’ve launched our ‘You Ask, We Answer’ initiative. This approach isn’t just about promoting our Barns, Cottages and Barges; it’s about providing valuable information, solutions, and peace of mind to our prospective guests.
Anyway, this is the video, and the transcript is below it if you wish to go back over anything.
This is what I said…
Discovering Thorpeness: A Hidden Gem in Suffolk
Hello, it’s Carl! Today, I’m taking you on a journey to Thorpeness, a quaint village just five minutes north of Aldeburgh. Unlike its more famous neighbour, Thorpeness is lesser-known, but it’s packed with charm and unique attractions that make it worth a visit.
The Meare: A Picturesque Boating Lake
One of the most notable features of Thorpeness is the Meare, a man-made boating lake that’s perfect for a leisurely paddle. Kayaks, canoes, and rowing boats are available for hire, making it a great spot for family fun. The Meare even has a couple of small islands—though officially you’re not supposed to land on them, it seems there’s nothing stopping adventurous souls!
Interestingly, there always used to be a full-sized model of a crocodile on one of the islands, adding a touch of whimsy and surprise to the scenery. Not sure if it’s still there.
Exploring Thorpeness on Foot
Wandering around Thorpeness, you’ll find more than just the Meare. There’s a charming duck pond and the Thorpeness Emporium, a delightful antique shop where I’ve picked up several pieces for the Barns, including a coffee table for the Granary Barn. You never know what treasures you might find!
Next to the Emporium is the Kitchen, a cosy little restaurant that’s perfect for a meal after a day of exploring. Nearby, the Thorpeness Tea Rooms offer the perfect spot to enjoy a cream tea, adding to the quintessentially English holiday vibe of the village.
A Unique Holiday Village
Thorpeness was originally designed as a Holiday Village, and while many now live here permanently, the area still retains its seaside charm. The proximity to the beach, along with quaint shops and eateries, makes Thorpeness feel like a step back in time.
Don’t Miss the Beach Boardwalk
Behind the shops, a beautiful boardwalk leads to the beach, reminiscent of scenes from classic films like Jaws. Though you won’t find any great whites here, the boardwalk offers a nostalgic seaside experience that adds to Thorpeness’s unique character.
