The Stories Behind Suffolk’s Oldest Pubs

It’s dry January, which means that in place of going out to the pubs, it’s an appropriate time to sit indoors and…write about pubs. Specifically, the pubs on offer to guests staying at our Barns and Barges for rent in Suffolk. So pour yourself a pint – of whatever you fancy – and sip on a few stories of our local watering holes.

The Nutshell, Bury St Edmunds

Touted as one of the smallest pubs in Britain, The Nutshell in Bury St Edmunds is a must-visit for anyone exploring Suffolk’s historic drinking spots. This tiny pub has been serving tasty ales since 1867, though the building itself dates back far further. Its snug interior can hold no more than a dozen patrons at a time, creating an intimate atmosphere perfect for sharing ghost stories and local legends. Among its quirks is a mummified cat hanging from the ceiling—a relic said to ward off evil spirits. Yes, really.

The Angel, Lavenham

Lavenham, one of England’s best-preserved medieval villages, is home to The Angel, a pub that dates all the way back to the 15th century. Once a coaching inn, The Angel boasts timber-framed architecture and a cosy ambience that takes visitors back in time. During its long history, it has hosted countless travellers, including merchants who traded Suffolk wool, which was once among the very finest to be found in Europe. Today, visitors can enjoy a pint while imagining the deals struck and tales shared by those who passed through centuries ago.

The Bell Inn, Walberswick

Situated in the charming coastal village of Walberswick, The Bell Inn dates back to the 14th century. This historic pub has long been a hub for locals and visitors to our home of Suffolk, including artists and writers who were drawn to the village’s natural beauty. The Bell Inn is also said to be haunted by the ghost of a smuggler, reflecting the area’s rich (and occasionally illicit) maritime history. The pub’s proximity to the beach and its hearty menu also make it a perfect spot for soaking up Suffolk’s coastal charm.

The Dolphin Inn, Thorpeness

The Dolphin Inn in Thorpeness is another gem with a storied past. Though relatively younger than some of the names on the list, it is deeply connected to the history of Thorpeness, a village transformed into a fantasy holiday destination in the early 20th century by Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie. The pub’s welcoming atmosphere and its location near the famous boating lake make it a delightful stop for couples seeking an intriguing day out, as well as budding history buffs.

The Ship Inn, Dunwich

Once a thriving port town, Dunwich is now a quiet village with a fascinating history—much of which lies beneath the sea due to coastal erosion. The Ship Inn, dating back to the 16th century, has stood resilient against the encroaching tides. This pub is the perfect place to learn about Dunwich’s dramatic decline while enjoying plenty of locally brewed ales and freshly cooked seafood. Tales of lost churches and sunken treasures add an air of mystery to the experience for good measure.

To make sure that you have some comfortable accommodation to return to after enjoying a few pints at any or all of these pubs, be sure to take a look at the current availability of our Barns and Barges for rent in Suffolk.
