This is what I said…

Discovering Terme Tettuccio: A Historic Thermal Spa in Montecatini Terme, Italy

Nestled in the charming town of Montecatini Terme, Italy, Terme Tettuccio is a historic thermal spa that draws visitors with its breathtaking architecture and healing thermal waters. Originally built in the 1700s and later renovated in the 1920s, Terme Tettuccio stands as a testament to opulent design and natural wellness.

A Glimpse into Terme Tettuccio’s Beauty

The architectural grandeur of Terme Tettuccio is nothing short of mesmerizing. With intricate frescoes, marble columns, and peaceful gardens, the spa offers visitors a unique glimpse into Italy’s historic love for elegance and beauty. The design feels almost ostentatious yet completely captivating, especially with its marble details and impressive frescoes.

The gardens around the spa are also meticulously kept, with a floral calendar on display. This beautiful floral arrangement updates monthly with the current month and year, adding to the charm of the gardens, especially on sunny days like the October afternoon when I last visited.

The Healing Waters of Terme Tettuccio

One of Terme Tettuccio’s unique features is its healing thermal waters, known for their rejuvenating properties. These waters are rich in minerals and have a notably salty taste. During my visit, my old school friend Mark and I braved tasting the waters, and I can confirm—they are incredibly salty! For a small fee, visitors can try a sample of the waters with a complimentary cup. Just be prepared: some of the taps are much saltier than others!

To cleanse our palates after the salty experience, we headed to the nearby bar for some freshly squeezed orange juice. Watching the orange juice being hand-squeezed added a delightful local touch to the experience.

Exploring Terme Tettuccio’s Grandeur

As we explored further, I was taken aback by the sheer scale and detail of the spa’s construction. Every ceiling, every walkway, and every corner seemed designed to impress, leaving nothing ordinary about this place. In the 1700s, building something of this grandeur must have been a monumental feat, and today, it’s clear why Terme Tettuccio remains one of Italy’s most stunning locations.

Just beyond the main structure lies a smaller section that appears to serve as a function room or possibly even office space. While it lacks the grandeur of the main spa, it’s interesting to see this contrast and imagine what these rooms were used for in years gone by.

Gardens, Wildlife, and Relaxation

The gardens surrounding Terme Tettuccio are perfect for a leisurely stroll. Although they don’t quite match the spa’s grandeur, they provide a relaxing and beautiful setting for visitors. As we wandered, we came across a charming brass wild boar sculpture, which adds a touch of whimsy to the surroundings.

If you’re visiting Montecatini Terme, make sure to take the nearby Funiculare up to Montecatini Alto for stunning views and an equally rich experience of Italian history.

Plan Your Visit

Terme Tettuccio is conveniently located on the edge of Montecatini Terme, with parking just a short two-minute walk away. This historic gem makes for a perfect addition to a day out in Montecatini Terme, especially for those interested in history, wellness, or simply enjoying a taste of Italy’s beautiful architecture.

Whether you’re visiting for the therapeutic waters or just to marvel at the incredible design, Terme Tettuccio is an experience like no other.
