Suffolk’s Springtime Sporting Events (and where to find them)

Whether you’re keen to combine your holiday with a spot of sport yourself, or are more of a spectator, it’s fair to say that Suffolk is spritely in springtime. From professionally organised running events to a (soon to be promoted) Ipswich Town closing their season in early May, there’s something for every kind of sports fan staying at our Barns and Barges for rent in Suffolk this spring.

No doubt one of the more scenic runs taking place in Suffolk this spring is set for Sunday 5th May in Thetford. Billed as the Euston Estate Half Marathon, the run takes participants through a wide ranging variety of terrain including, but not limited to: woodland tracks, sandy stretches and gentle hills. Along the way, runners are treated to spectacular views of the Euston Estate. It’s tough to imagine any run being quite so easy on the eye…

For anyone keen to get out and enjoy a spot of cycling during their holiday with us in spring, there are plenty of organised as well as competitive rides to choose from. Here in Woodbridge, for instance, we have the Suffolk Sunrise event which offers routes of varying lengths set against the beautiful backdrop of our local surroundings. Pitched at experienced riders as well as those looking to undertake their first lengthy ride, we’re firm believers that this popular annual event, which takes place towards the end of May, is well worth bringing your bike along for.

For anyone who enjoys captaining or watching boats on the water, there are a number of sailing regattas which take place throughout May around the Suffolk Yacht Harbour. Accompanied by sea shanty singing (yes, we’re serious), there are few finer places to take in the sight of colourful boats than Suffolk in spring.

It will also come as no surprise to learn that there are plenty of local cricket fixtures which begin to take place towards the end of spring in Suffolk. After all, what would a town in rural England be without its cricket green? Well known for hosting a variety of exciting fixtures, the nearby Ipswich Cricket Club is the perfect spot to catch an enjoyable spot of cricket when staying with us in Suffolk this spring.

It should also go without saying that there’s a whole lot of lower league football competitions which take place throughout spring that make for fantastic weekend entertainment. From grassroot clubs to the final stretch of Ipswich Town’s Championship campaign, we’re confident that every kind of football fan can find something to enjoy when staying with us ahead of summer.

To enjoy any or all of these springtime sporting events in Suffolk as part of a holiday, be sure to take a look at the current availability of our Barns and Barges for rent. We’re confident that we provide exactly the kind of comfortable accommodation you’ll need after a day of stretching your legs or spectating.
