Stunning Southwold – a popular choice with many of our holiday-makers
Southwold is a must-see destination when you are on holiday here in Suffolk.
Southwold is one of those great places that us locals like to keep going back to as well! So many of our holiday-makers head over to Southwold for a day out. A superb choice of restaurants, pubs, shops and stunning sea views, Southwold is such a great place to take a stroll overlooking the sea, any time of the year.
There’s a wonderful eclectic mix of boutique clothes shops, antiques, artisan foods, restaurants, coffee shops, pubs and independent food stores. On top of all that, you get the breath-taking scenery of the sea-front and beyond, which must include a trip along the pier.
The emphasis on Southwold Pier is on the bizarre and quirky! There’s a great museum called ‘Under the Pier’, which describes itself as “A MAD ARCADE OF HOME-MADE MACHINES & SIMULATOR RIDES ON SOUTHWOLD PIER, SUFFOLK, UK”.
It features some weird and wonderful exhibits highlighting arcade machines of the past. You can visit their website.
There’s a lovely restaurant right on the pier itself, which is a very welcome stop for coffee or lunch. As you walk off Southwold Pier there is a great mural of George Orwell on the side of a building.
A walk along the seafront here is a treat any time of the year, even in the height of the winter. All these pics were taken by me just before Christmas but do wrap up warm!
According to The Daily Mail’s list of the Top 50 UK beach destinations, Southwold “is that rare British phenomenon, a posh seaside place aimed squarely at people who know how to pronounce hors d’oeuvres without making it sound like something unpleasant involving horses. The beach is a treat: a regular winner of the acclaimed Blue Flag award, with its golden sands providing exquisite summer relaxation or long walks all year round. The promenade is a great place for an afternoon stroll. Or you might prefer to take in the view with a glass of Adnams’ highly regarded local beer.”
The high street itself has so many good shops, making a refreshing change from the big town centres. One of my favourites is wonderful fruit, veg and wholefood store at the top end, called Artichoke (sorry, I can’t find a website).
Another favourite is the Adnams flagship Cellar & Kitchen store and you can even take a brewery tour. Check out all the details on their website.
You’ll be spoilt for choice if you fancy lunch, dinner or just a drink as there are lots of great pubs, restaurants, coffee shops and delis.
Southwold has always been a really popular choice amongst our guests so do make sure you go when you’re holidaying or visiting Suffolk.
