Happy Hens and Holidays in Suffolk
Just in case you didn’t know, we supply a delicious Suffolk Breakfast Basket with every break at Woodfarm Barns and we put lots of lovely local produce in to get your first full day off to a great start. Here’s a little story about the Happy Hens around the corner who do their bit to make your stay special.
Just a few miles around the corner are small flocks of happy hens roaming free in spacious meadows at Mill Green Farm, stopping now and then to lay eggs for the good people of Stonham Aspal, including our visitors to Woodfarm Barns.
They are hand fed and looked after every day of the year. The eggs are collected and hand graded to ensure that only the best, freshest eggs make it into the boxes and trays, ready for collection by anyone who wishes. And the nice thing about the Mill Green Farm eggs is that you literally pull into the farm, where they have a little open shed selling them by the half dozen, dozen and trays of 30.
There’s no-one to serve you as it is a busy working farm, there is just an honesty box for you to leave your money. It’s a big step up from the odd rickety table you see by the side of the road though, as one does throughout Suffolk and indeed the countryside of Britain. There are hundreds of eggs in there every time I go so they are clearly doing a roaring trade!
The satisfying thing buying eggs here is that just next to the little shed are the meadows, with the happy hens milling about, chatting (I presume) and feeding.
This is a world away from mass egg production where thousands of not happy hens are kept in big sheds without venturing out much. The Happy Hens of Mill Green Farm are encouraged to roam around outside and forage naturally in the meadows, giving them a nice life, and us Proper Free Range Eggs!
The team at Mill Green are happy for you to come and see the hens and buy their produce so why not take a trip down there next time you’re staying here and pick up some real Suffolk produce.
They don’t have a website but can be found in Stonham Aspal, just around the corner from Woodfarm Barns. Their postcode is IP14 6BZ.
So if you’d like to come and visit some very happy hens and try our their wonderful eggs, along with some of the bacon we wrote about recently from Palfrey & Hall then why not grab your diary and have a look at our Availability Page and start thinking about that Breakfast Basket?
