Discover Suffolk’s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty

There are 46 designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) in the UK, and we are fortunate to have two right on our doorstep! These AONBs offer a wealth of opportunities for both people and wildlife to benefit from our countryside, and they play a vital role in supporting the local economy and the health and wellbeing of our society.

We’ve written about them both in the past but here’s a blog post, pulling them both together. One of the most satisfying features of our location is our proximity to both of these iconic destinations. Guests aboard both of our Barges, as well as our Barns and Cottages can enjoy these two stunning areas with ease whilst staying with us.

Suffolk Coast & Heaths AONB

Suffolk Coast & Heaths AONB is located on Suffolk’s beautiful Heritage Coast, stretching from the Stour estuary in the south to Kessingland in the north, covering 403 square kilometres. This AONB features a diverse landscape, including marshlands, shingle beaches, estuaries, cliffs, heaths, woods, and farmland. Highlights include Dunwich Heath, a stunning area that inspires many artists, writers, and musicians. The medieval market town of Aldeburgh, along with coastal towns like Southwold and Orford, are popular visitor spots. For those interested in dog-friendly beaches, Suffolk Coast & Heaths offers plenty of options.

Dedham Vale AONB

Dedham Vale AONB is another gem located on the Essex-Suffolk border. This AONB is renowned for its picturesque villages, rolling farmland, rivers, meadows, ancient woodlands, and diverse wildlife. It is famously associated with artists like Constable and Gainsborough, who captured its beauty in their works. A popular walk in this AONB is from Dedham to Flatford, offering breathtaking sights and the chance to enjoy a cream tea at the National Trust tea room. Dedham Vale covers 90 square kilometres and stretches from Manningtree to within a mile of Bures.

Both AONBs offer a variety of activities for visitors. In the Suffolk Coast & Heaths AONB, you can marvel at the rich birdlife at Thorpeness, Walberswick, Orford, or Sutton Heath. Visit the well-preserved pier in Southwold, enjoy music on the bandstand at Aldeburgh, or shop at Snape Maltings. Dedham Vale is perfect for peaceful kayaking on the River Stour or exploring the landscapes that inspired famous artworks.
