This is what I said…

Discovering Viareggio on Tuscany’s Adriatic Coast

Welcome to Viareggio, a cosmopolitan seaside town on Tuscany’s Adriatic coast, just a short 20-minute drive north of Pisa and less than an hour from our beautiful Tuscan retreat, Casa Trebbio. Let me share some highlights of this charming spot and what makes it a perfect day trip when you’re staying with us.

A Beach Lover’s Paradise

Viareggio is well-known for its seemingly endless stretch of beach clubs that line the promenade. These beach clubs offer a fantastic setup: you pay a fee to use the showers, dressing rooms, and sun loungers, and many also have in-house restaurants. For those preferring a bit more freedom, there’s a sizable public beach area and well-maintained boardwalks extending out to the sea.

Boutique Shopping in Style

The town’s promenade is lined with a diverse selection of boutique shops, particularly clothing stores. Whether you’re after a unique outfit or just enjoy browsing through chic Italian boutiques, Viareggio offers a shopping experience set against the backdrop of historical buildings and charming pedestrian pathways.

Delightful Dining Experiences

One of my favorite spots for dining is the Grand Café Margherita, a grand old building with a wonderful outdoor seating area. Many restaurants here have screened-off patios, so you can enjoy your meal without the hustle of passersby. Seafood is a staple in this area, with fresh catches often sold directly from the fishing boats as they dock.

Exploring the Marina and Fishing Harbor

Viareggio’s harbour is a bustling area where local fishing boats bring in the day’s catch. You’ll often find vendors selling fresh fish right off the boats. Nearby, the marina is home to some impressive yachts, and if you’re a fan of luxury vessels, it’s worth taking a stroll to admire these beauties.

Enjoying a Sunset at Viareggio

As the day draws to a close, Viareggio’s beach becomes a tranquil spot to watch the sunset. The golden glow over the Adriatic is stunning, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a game of volleyball as locals make the most of the evening light.
