Doberman dog

The Doberman, Framsden: a lovely local pub with great food

A great local pub. The Woodfarm Barns team had a great Saturday night out to celebrate the finishing of the development.

It was long overdue but we’d been so busy it just hadn’t happened. We were definitely ready to have a good night though and the Doberman certainly delivered!

Formerly the Greyhound, this pretty country pub was renamed by its proprietor Sue, a prominent breeder and judge of Dobermans. The thatched roofing, gnarled beams, open fire and assorted furniture reflect its 16th-century origins. With a selection of Adnams ales on offer and Mauldons Dickens bitter, and food ranging from sandwiches, hearty ploughman’s and salads to main courses featuring plenty of fish and vegetarian choices.

It’s such a warm, cosy atmosphere and with its low-flying beams and stone fireplace, along with a friendly welcome from Sue, we immediately relaxed into a huddle of comfy sofas with our drinks. I was again asked whether I wanted a straight glass or a tankard, which I hadn’t been asked for years until the same week! (I don’t spend alll my time in pubs…) It’s worth warning you that Sue has a sharp wit, combined with a steady poker face. A deadly combination in a woman.

We all enjoyed a 3-course home-cooked meal, which left us feeling very stuffed and very satisfied. I had filo-wrapped king prawns, a great fillet steak, cooked perfectly and then some heavenly chocolate thing whose name now escapes me but it was amazing! They serve great beer and wine as well as a mean meal.

The Doberman is way off the beaten track but well worth a visit, just round the corner from Helmingham Hall and only ten minutes from Woodfarm House & Barns; it’s also a regular haunt for our guests.
