Bird watching in Suffolk

Suffolk Coastal birdwatching adventures.

The Suffolk coastal region offers some of the very best birdwatching around.

We are blessed here in Suffolk with 31 RSPB reserves, many of which are in the Suffolk coastal region, just a short drive from us here at Woodfarm Barns.

As urban sprawl continues its seemingly unending march across England it’s delightful to know that there are still many untouched natural gems here in Suffolk.

Whether you’re an old hand at birdwatching or a beginner, a Suffolk coastal visit has much to offer you all.

Great White Egrets, Snow Buntings, Caspian Gulls, Barnacle Geese, Spotted Redshank and Black Redstarts are just a few of the rich and varied birds that can be spotted in the Suffolk coastal region.

The RSPB do a fantastic job protecting our local birdlife and providing reserves which make for fantastic days out for all the family. A map of these can be found here.

Fancy a day watching marsh harriers sky-dancing over the reed-beds? Viewing sand martins skimming overhead? Listening to warblers and nightingales singing their beautiful tunes? Then why not pay one of our Suffolk coastal bird reserves a visit?

RSPB Minsmere is the top of many people’s lists when it comes to birdwatching in Suffolk. It is so much more than just a Nature Reserve, it’s a great day out for the entire family.

Children will love the Wild Zone, complete with den building, child-sized sand martin tunnels and a willow-woven nest.

There’s a Discovery Centre and a Visitor Centre which provide in-depth information on the natural resources in the area. Families can also borrow an Explorer Backpack for self-guided wildlife discovery. These packs contain binoculars, a bugbox and a wildlife checklist. Great fun!
Minsmere may be the premier birdwatching destination in the Suffolk coastal region but there are many more reserves also well worth a visit, including:

Dingle Marshes

North Warren

Havergate Island

and

Boyton & Hollesley Marshes.

Located just a short drive from all of the locations mentioned above, Woodfarm Barns offers an excellent ‘jumping off point’ for your birdwatching adventures. Why not come and stay in a luxury holiday cottage? We get some beautiful birds visiting us here too!
