Suffolk Holiday Cottage days out – Walberswick and Southwold
Another grand day out from our Suffolk holiday cottages; Walberswick and Southwold are two charming seaside towns on the Suffolk coast, filled with culture and beautiful scenery. Visiting both of these would make a perfect day out by the sea.
So what are we going to share with you in this episode of our ‘Grand days out’?
- Walberswick
- The Anchor at Walberswick
- Southwold
- Adnams tours
All this is just over half an hour away from our Suffolk holiday cottages and again, is a very popular day out with our guests. And us!
Walberswick
“An idyllically secluded village on Suffolk Heritage Coast”, Walberswick has gone from a thriving port trading in cheese, fish and timber from the 13th century to a bustling tourist attraction today. There’s a fabulous dune-laden shingle beach that stretches for miles, plus a handful of unique little craft and gift shops to bag yourself a souvenir.
Walberswick is also famous for crabbing, hosting the British Open Crabbing Championship every year. Give crabbing a go, there will be plenty of people nearby to show you how it’s done!
The Anchor at Walberswick
One of the tasty places to eat here is The Anchor. An award-winning restaurant, listed in the UK Top 50 Gastro Pubs in 2014, with great effort put into sourcing fine local ingredients, as well as local and global beers and wines. It’s also dog-friendly, so feel free to bring your furry friends!
They provide breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Daily Specials include salt cod croquettes and steak and ale pie, or come for a Summer BBQ on a Sunday and enjoy a fresh delicious lunch with meats and salads. One visitor referred to it as “The friendliest restaurant around. Great service, great food, great place”.
Southwold
Come here to enjoy an unspoilt English seaside resort as it used to be – with a quirky cinema, an iconic lighthouse, a wonderful pier and a sandy beach. Not only is it the pier that draws visitors, the nature reserves, coastal cruises to take and the famous Adnams brewery to explore give tourists so much to do in Southwold. If you haven’t been to Southwold, then you’ll almost certainly have heard of it; it’s such a massive hit with the guests at our Suffolk holiday cottages
There are local crafts and galleries to shop in, and food shops including Nutters Deli and The Two Magpies Bakery, packed with mouth-watering local produce.
Adnams Tour
For those of you who fancy doing something a little bit different, behind one of the Victorian buildings is one of the most modern breweries in the UK, with a distillery. Book a tour to see behind the scenes and discover how they make their award-winning beverages. You can even create your very own!
During the tour you will be shown the beer-making process from start to finish, followed by a tutored beer tasting activity. After this, you get the chance to try a selection of Adnams’ other products and you collect your own bottle of Adnams beer. All of this only costs £12 per person so I believe it’s a few hours well spent!
If you start off visiting Walberswick you can grab the foot ferry across to Southwold, or take the slightly longer walk to the footbridge. But Southwold is much larger so you may prefer to drive here and walk across to Walberswick, whatever takes your fancy!
I do hope you enjoy your time in Walberswick and Southwold, whether you’re staying in one of our Suffolk holiday cottages or not.
