Where to Go Ice Skating in Suffolk This Winter

Whether you’ve been compared to Torvill and Dean, have only given ice skating a go once, or simply fancy indulging in one of the best winter traditions going, we’re pleased to say there are plenty of ice skating options to choose from when staying at our Barns and Barges for rent in Suffolk. In true Woodfarm style, we’ve helpfully rounded up a few of our favourite spots to make it as straightforward as possible when it comes to deciding where you hit the ice.

1. Bury St Edmunds Christmas Market Rink

Nestled in the heart of historic Bury St Edmunds, the Christmas Market ice rink has become something of an anticipated tradition in Suffolk. Set against the iconic backdrop of the Abbey Gardens, this pop-up rink is very much the centrepiece of the town’s festive celebrations. The market itself is full of stalls offering all the spoils of Christmas, from mulled wine to handmade gifts, delicious treats and more. In short, it makes for the ideal day out during a winter holiday in Suffolk. The rink is open throughout December, and with cheerful music filling the air, you won’t struggle to feel the holiday spirit whilst gliding about.

2. Ipswich Cornhill Ice Rink

Located in Ipswich’s bustling town centre, the Cornhill Ice Rink offers a fantastic ice skating experience. The rink itself is surrounded by plenty of festive decorations which help to create a picturesque winter wonderland vibe. After a skate, visitors are able to warm themselves up with a hot chocolate or a browse of the nearby shops for Christmas gifts. Open for several weeks leading up to Christmas, it’s a convenient choice for guests staying at our Barns and Barges. Booking ahead is recommended to secure your spot during peak times.

3. Framlingham Castle Pop-Up Rink

For a more atmospheric experience, head to Framlingham Castle, where history meets festive fun throughout December. This temporary rink, set up within the castle grounds, provides stunning views of the mediaeval walls as you skate. Easy enough to pair up with an informative tour of the castle, it couldn’t be simpler to enjoy the unique combination of heritage and a winter tradition in Suffolk.

4. Halesworth Millennium Green

If you’re seeking a quieter option, the temporary rink at Halesworth Millennium Green offers a relaxed environment to skate and soak in the seasonal spirit. This sustainability-designed venue is surrounded by nature, making it something of a  picturesque choice for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the ice rinks which feature in larger towns. Be sure to keep an eye out for local events, as the rink often hosts themed skating sessions.

5. Aldeburgh Winter Garden Rink

If you’re after a coastal twist on ice skating, you won’t go wrong by visiting the Winter Garden Rink in Aldeburgh. This small but charming venue is ideal for combining a day at the seaside with some festive fun. After skating, you’ll be able to take a stroll along the beach or simply enjoy fish and chips from one of the town’s many famous eateries.

From mediaeval castles to seaside charm, Suffolk’s skating rinks ultimately offer a range of enjoyable and diverse experiences this winter. So, what are you waiting for? Isn’t it time you checked the availability of our Barns and Barges for rent in Suffolk?
