Do we need Car Hire in Tuscany?

Do we need to hire a car in Tuscany?

By

When planning a stay at Casa Trebbio in Woodfarm Tuscany, a common question guests ask is: Do you need a car? The short answer is yes, but let’s go into a little more detail.

This video is part of our You Ask, We Answer series, where we address frequently asked questions to help you make the most of your stay. If you’re considering a visit to Casa Trebbio, it’s important to understand the logistics of getting there and exploring the surrounding area.

Transcript:

Yes, you do. Well, you could do it without a car, but you’d miss out on so much. There are two key reasons why I strongly recommend having one.

First, let’s talk about the location. Casa Trebbio is perched 1,300 feet up on a hillside, which is precisely why I bought it, the views are absolutely stunning! But to get those views, you need to take a 10-minute drive up a winding road. You can walk it, my daughter has, but it’s a long, inconvenient trek. That winding road is in better condition than most of Britain’s pothole-ridden roads, but it is still quite steep and not ideal for walking up with luggage or shopping.

Now, for the second reason: you’ll miss out on so much if you don’t have a car. Casa Trebbio is in a rural area, meaning that while you can get into Lucca (which is a small city), there are so many incredible places to explore beyond it. We have plenty of recommendations on our website for day trips and places to visit, but realistically, a car is the best way to experience the region.

If your plan is just to see Pisa, Rome, or Florence, then staying somewhere in the city and using planes and trains might work for you. But if you want to truly explore Tuscany, you’ll want a car.

Now, let me show you exactly what I mean.

You’ll likely fly into Pisa Airport, where I highly recommend picking up a hire car directly at the airport, rather than using the shuttle service. From there, you’ll drive towards Lucca, which takes about 20–25 minutes. My suggestion? Skip the motorway and go via San Giuliano Terme: it’s much prettier.

Once in Lucca, you’ll head towards Ponte a Moriano, then onto the base of the hill where Casa Trebbio is located. From there, it’s a snaking 10-minute drive with a series of hairpin bends leading up to the house. It’s an easy drive, but definitely not one I’d want to walk!

So, in summary: yes, you need a car. It’ll make your trip far more enjoyable, letting you explore the region properly and easily reach the house.

If you have any questions, just pick up the phone and give me a call: I know the area like the back of my hand and I’d be happy to help.
