Baylham House Rare Breeds Farm

Baylham House Farm is acres and acres of Suffolk farmland, owned by the Storer family, who are passionate about breeding traditional varieties of farm animals to protect them against the detrimental effect of commercial pressures on the industry

The animals have a natural, stress-free habitat and great living conditions, which is so evident just wandering round the place

It’s £6 for adults to get in, £3 for kids and £5 for concessions. You do get the real sense that the money is ploughed straight back in to the running of the farm. It’s a family-run, family-orientated farm, with a great little tea-shop at the entrance, but you don’t need to take kids with you to fit in! We went during the summer, as two big kids and had a fantastic time

Highland Cattle

It had been recommended by some Woodfarm House guests so we decided to go and check it out. It’s only about ten minutes away, between Needham Market & Stowmarket. On the day we went, it was tipping down with rain just as we arrived so we nabbed the last table in the tea room and enjoyed some lovely home-made quiche and salad. Pretty much all the food there is made on the premises

Once the skies had cleared, we ventured out and were really impressed. It’s very well laid-out and maintained and the animals seem to be pretty much roaming as free as they want. Just look at the smile on this rare hogs face!

They are keen to point out that the public are invited to come and visit a working livestock farm, not a commercial tourist attraction, but they have set it out really well. There is lots of info to educate us on the animals and the natural environment, without it feeling like you are being patronised

There’s an outside eating area with a great sign on the fence as you look in at everyone enjoying their lunch……

They were winners of best visitor experience in Suffolk in 2006, 2007 and 2010 and runners up in 2008 & 2009, so they have to be worth checking out whilst you are here
